Fires Of Gold written by Lauren Coyle Rosen and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020 with Business & Economics categories.

Fires of Gold is a powerful ethnography of the often shrouded cultural, legal, political, and spiritual forces governing the gold mining industry in Ghana, one of Africa's most celebrated democracies. Lauren Coyle Rosen argues that significant sources of power have arisen outside of the formal legal system to police, adjudicate, and navigate conflict in this theater of violence, destruction, and rebirth. These authorities, or shadow sovereigns, include the transnational mining company, collectivized artisanal miners, civil society advocacy groups, and significant religious figures and spiritual forces from African, Islamic, and Christian traditions. Often more salient than official bodies of government, the shadow sovereigns reveal a reconstitution of sovereign power--one that, in many ways, is generated by hidden dimensions of the legal system. Coyle Rosen also contends that spiritual forces are central in anchoring and animating shadow sovereigns as well as key forms of legal authority, economic value, and political contestation. This innovative book illuminates how the crucible of gold, itself governed by spirits, serves as a critical site for embodied struggles over the realignment of the classical philosophical triad: the city, the soul, and the sacred.

Imperial Twilight written by Stephen R. Platt and has been published by Vintage this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-05-15 with History categories.

As China reclaims its position as a world power, Imperial Twilight looks back to tell the story of the country’s last age of ascendance and how it came to an end in the nineteenth-century Opium War. As one of the most potent turning points in the country’s modern history, the Opium War has since come to stand for everything that today’s China seeks to put behind it. In this dramatic, epic story, award-winning historian Stephen Platt sheds new light on the early attempts by Western traders and missionaries to “open” China even as China’s imperial rulers were struggling to manage their country’s decline and Confucian scholars grappled with how to use foreign trade to China’s advantage. The book paints an enduring portrait of an immensely profitable—and mostly peaceful—meeting of civilizations that was destined to be shattered by one of the most shockingly unjust wars in the annals of imperial history. Brimming with a fascinating cast of British, Chinese, and American characters, this riveting narrative of relations between China and the West has important implications for today’s uncertain and ever-changing political climate.

We often ponder how some individuals, starting at the lowest rung of life’s ladder, reach their retirement years with happiness, contentment, and a vibrant lifestyle, equipped with essentials that even those who prospered in their earlier years find themselves lacking. Is there a secret formula that leads to such fulfilment? How can one ensure that their twilight years are filled with hope, contentment, and a genuine sense of personal achievement, especially in a world where many are preoccupied with financial concerns and yearn for a past that is forever gone? Nest of Gold offers answers to these questions. From the outset, it guides the reader, who might otherwise face a disappointing retirement, by outlining steps and techniques to follow. These strategies provide a well-trodden path to a secure and fulfilling later life. While the book primarily addresses the future planning of those in the lower-middle class, its principles are universal. The key is in adapting the advice to one’s individual earnings and wealth. The overarching goal is inclusive: to leave no one behind and to contribute to the eradication of poverty. Nest of Gold is more than a guide; it’s a manifesto for a brighter, more secure future for everyone.

British Columbia By The Road written by Ben Bradley and has been published by UBC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-06-07 with History categories.

In British Columbia by the Road, Ben Bradley takes readers on an unprecedented journey through the history of roads, highways, and motoring in British Columbia’s Interior, a remote landscape composed of plateaus and interlocking valleys, soaring mountains and treacherous passes. Challenging the idea that the automobile offered travellers the freedom of the road and a view of unadulterated nature, Bradley shows that boosters, businessmen, conservationists, and public servants manipulated what drivers and passengers could and should view from the comfort of their vehicles. Although cars and roads promised freedom, they offered drivers a curated view of the landscape that shaped the province’s image in the eyes of residents and visitors alike.
