THE SAGAEveryone and every place has a story - a saga. Old Preston Bend, its people and the grand house that came to exemplify Preston - Glen Eden - were no exception. The Saga of Preston Bend and Glen Eden is a very interesting tale. It is full of grand success and failures to match. As most interesting tales are, it is a very old story - one that never really had a definite beginning and never really came to an end. Even though its physical presence, in the 1940s, was Gone With The Water of the lake, its memory, still to this day - lingers on.Let us remember together the fascinating Saga of Preston Bend and Glen Eden. The companion book to this one will be "Crime and Calamity in Preston Bend." I invite you to relive the wild times on the old horseshoe bend of the Red River in both books. - Natalie Clountz BaumanThis book will not be exhaustive, or it would be immense. I will attempt to add to what has been presented before in other books, not just repeat it. This book will present the story of Preston Bend, its people and especially those centered around its most famous mansion - Glen Eden. My purpose is to make information available that you will not see everywhere else, and make it accessible in one place, so you won't have to do all the hours of research yourself to find it all. This has always been my goal. I am a great lover of this area and its history, being a descendant of residents who came here as early as 1866. I have always been regaled with stories of area history, admired the old pictures and written about its people since my teen years. My education and training were not in history or writing, but in photography, accounting and computers. My love for my local history and my desire to preserve it for the future, compelled me to attempt to fill holes I saw in the current historical record, especially in the northwestern part of Grayson County. I am no expert, but I do try my best! I do all the research, I format the book myself and publish it. Please forgive any shortcomings you may recognize in my writings. I hope my work has improved with experience. They're sixteen, and they are ... fine. Scarlett comes home and finds a mother she barely recognises, and doesn't really know who she's supposed to be, either. But she remembers Lucas. Lucas remembers Scarlett, too, but they can't recall where they've been or what happened to them. Neither of them remember the sixth victim, Max. He doesn't come back and everyone wants answers. Addictive and unforgettable, The Leaving seethes with rich characters, tense storytelling and high stakes.

Briscoe's grandmother remembered stories about the first white men coming to the Northern Territory. This extraordinary memoir shows us the history of an Aboriginal family who lived under the race laws, practices and policies of Australia in the twentieth century. It tells the story of a people trapped in ideological folly spawned to solve 'the half-caste problem'. It gives life to those generations of Aboriginal people assumed to have no history and whose past labels them only as shadowy figures. Briscoe's enthralling narrative combines his, and his contemporaries, institutional and family life with a high-level career at the heart of the Aboriginal political movement at its most dynamic time. It also documents the road he travelled as a seventeen year old fireman on the South Australia Railways to becoming the first Aboriginal person to achieve a PhD in history.

We are pleased to announce a new series of environmental history readers, suitable for students. Comprising essays selected from our journals, Environment and History and Environmental Values, each inexpensive paperback volume will address an important theme in environmental history, combining underlying theory and specific case-studies. The first volume, Bio-invaders, investigates the rhetoric and realities of exotic, introduced and 'alien' species. The book comprises a number of general essays, exploring and challenging common perceptions about such species, and a series of case studies of specific species in specific contexts. Its geographical coverage ranges from the United Kingdom to New Zealand by way of South Africa, India and Palestine; and the essays cover both historical and recent introductions.

Hal Wallis written by Bernard F. Dick and has been published by University Press of Kentucky this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-01-13 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Hal Wallis might not be as well known as David O. Selznick or Samuel Goldwyn, but the films he produced -- Casablanca, Jezebel, Now Voyager, The Life of Emile Zola, Becket, True Grit, and many other classics (as well as scores of Elvis movies) -- have certainly endured. As producer of numerous films, Wallis made an indelible mark on the course of America's film industry, but his contributions are often overlooked and no full-length study has yet assessed his incredible career. A former office boy and salesman, Wallis first engaged with the business of film as the manager of a Los Angeles movie theater in 1922. He attracted the notice of the Warner brothers, who hired him as a publicity assistant. Within three months he was director of the department, and appointments to studio manager and production executive quickly followed. Wallis went on to oversee dozens of productions and formed his own production company in 1944. Bernard F. Dick draws on numerous sources such as Wallis's personal production files and exclusive interviews with many of his contemporaries to finally tell the full story of his illustrious career. Dick combines his knowledge of behind-the-scenes Hollywood with fascinating anecdotes to create a portrait of one of Hollywood's early power players.
