More of the pupils' time during the high school period is devoted to English than to any other subject, and this independent of the fact that every recitation is, in a sense, a recitation in English. In the large academic high schools there are more teachers of English than of any other subject. How far the results of the teaching justify the time and energy expended is not easily determined. It is not to be denied that results are not always what either the public or the teachers themselves could wish. In this connection there should be taken into account the forces at work outside of school which impair the results of English teaching, and which seriously handicap the work of teachers in this subject as the work of no other body of high school teachers is handicapped. Some of these forces are the prevailing low standards of spoken English in many homes and in many communities, the dislike of a large number of pupils for written composition of any sort, their inability to see the relation of good English to the practical affairs of the world, and the enormous amount of cheap periodical matter which the news stands offer in tempting colors or pictorial adornment to old and young alike. Excerpt from Working Course in English for the Public Schools A well-rounded presentation of reading requires the subject to be approached from two distinct points of view. In the first, methods are used to give the children a mastery of the technique of pronounciation. In this approach the New Education System or the Ward System of Rational Reading may be taken as a basis. In as much as drill in reading based on the phonetic method is apt to develop mere formal work, unaccompanied on the part of the child by an understanding of the sense, a wholly different approach to the reading lesson must at times be made. This approach is an attempt to lead the child into the lesson by making him appeciate its thought. The child should be induced to "sense" the thought behind the words. An appeal must be made to his experience to make him realize the thought. He should be led to see vividly the scenes portrayed by the sentences. Lessons in which the words convey even by their very sounds a large part, at least, of their meaning should be chosen as often as possible for this second phase of the work. The child is to be made to see, to feel, to picture the central idea of the sentence. Having done this, he is ready to utilize the formal articulation of words, gained through the study of words phonetically, in the clear and live expression of the thought as he reads the sentence. "How to Teach Reading," by S. H. Clark (S. F. & Co.), deals at length, in chapter viii, with the expression of the central idea of the sentence. School reading naturally divides itself into three heads; first, the regular recitation work in the State Series Reader. Our teaching has often been too aca demic; we have copied the college methods without examining them to see whether they were pedagogically sound as high school methods. The consequence has been that we have allowed our classes to drift along, with the burden of real preparation placed on the pupils of the upper classes. Such slipshod work as this not only has failed to prepare classes properly for college, but has left out of account those pupils who are not preparing for college, as well as those who leave school before the course is completed. We are beginning to see, how ever, that English as well as other branches of study can be taught in a definite and logical manner; that the proper time for beginning the work, whether in prepara tion for college or for the world at large, is in the first year; that, sound as college methods may be for the col lege, they may;r not be sound for the high school; that the whole of rhetoric should not be taught in the first year, or in any year, any more than the whole of algebra or the whole of Latin; that a book containing all the prin ciples of rhetoric is, at this early stage, in the highest degree confusing; and that practice under direction is essential to coherent expression.
