End of USA as Global Superpower The USA will become another Europe but without the class, culture and history. In 1940, the qualities possessed by the British were independence, self-reliance, individual initiative, responsibility, tolerance, voluntary service and respect for custom, tradition and authority, but without reliance on them. To-day Britons are almost the opposite and as a consequence Britain is very different. 40 percent of people in the UK now receive state handouts and the reflex response to any passing inconvenience is to demand the government something. Under Obama, the USA is on the same disastrous path, even though two-thirds of the electorate opposes what Obama is imposing upon them. Half of those in a bankrupt Britain after World War 2 wanted to go to a welfare state like lambs to the slaughter after escaping the Nazi jackboot. The socialists were elected with almost 50% of the vote to implement a 'cradle to grave' welfare state starting with the British National Health Service. Once in place, Britain has found that this welfare mentality is a crutch which can never be removed. The USA is on an increasingly self absorbed moral decline.

Though the women came to the U.S. from all parts of the British Isles, they were an unusually homogeneous group, averaging 23 years of age, from working- or lower-middle-class families and having completed mandatory schooling to the age of fourteen. For the most part they emigrated alone and didn't move into an existing immigrant population.

Unbecoming British written by Kariann Akemi Yokota and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-11-23 with History categories.

What can homespun cloth, stuffed birds, quince jelly, and ginseng reveal about the formation of early American national identity? In this wide-ranging and bold new interpretation of American history and its Founding Fathers, Kariann Akemi Yokota shows that political independence from Britain fueled anxieties among the Americans about their cultural inferiority and continuing dependence on the mother country. Caught between their desire to emulate the mother country and an awareness that they lived an ocean away on the periphery of the known world, they went to great lengths to convince themselves and others of their refinement. Taking a transnational approach to American history, Yokota examines a wealth of evidence from geography, the decorative arts, intellectual history, science, and technology to underscore that the process of "unbecoming British" was not an easy one. Indeed, the new nation struggled to define itself economically, politically, and culturally in what could be called America's postcolonial period. Out of this confusion of hope and exploitation, insecurity and vision, a uniquely American identity emerged.

In this authoritative and gripping book--the first full account of the 1976 International Monetary Fund crisis--Kathleen Burk and Alec Cairncross peel back the surface of the most searing economic crisis of postwar Britain to reveal its historical roots and contemporary context. During the spring of 1976, the plummeting value of the British pound against the U.S. dollar triggered a traumatic economic and political crisis. International confidence in the pound collapsed; an article in the Wall Street Journal, headlined "Good-bye, Great Britain," urged investors to get out of sterling. Refused aid by the London and New York markets, the Labour Government under Prime Minister James Callaghan was forced to turn for help to the IMF--a highly unusual move for a developed Western economy. Fearing that the economic crisis would drive Britain into a left-wing siege economy which would endanger NATO and the EEC, the United States and Germany used the IMF loan as a means to force Britain to make major domestic policy changes; when the IMF mission arrived in London in November 1976, it was announced that the price for the loan included deep cuts in domestic spending. Burk and Cairncross uncover the maneuvers of the Labour Government to evade IMF conditions. They also examine underlying economic factors, the political agenda, the rise of monetarist ideas, and the Keynesian response. Juxtaposing narrative with analysis, they provide surprising answers to critical questions and reveal how the breakdown of the post-war consensus on the macroeconomic management paved the way for the triumph of Thatcherism.

There is constant talk that the 21st century will be China's century. That is not an inexorable fact, but in any event most analysts expect a certain decline in American and European influence and a massive rise in the global influence of China and possibly of India over the 21st century. This raises many issues of concern to the world as a whole, but in particular to Americans and Europeans. This book explores in a global context some of the issues of what we understand by the term 'freedom'. It also asks if there is any such thing as 'absolute freewill', and if not (as many philosophers will have us believe), then what are the circumstances that determine and control relative individual freedom? Whiston does not limit himself to an analysis of China, America, and the EU, but also considers present-day Russia – still a very potent and fearful entity – and its military and economic role over future decades and indeed the next century. Thus, two massive powers, China and Russia, have a great part to play on the world scene. But this is very, very worrying: both nations are enigmas when it comes to issues of personal freedom. This book suggests that we are now at a stage of global moral appeasement comparable to that experienced just before the commencement of the Second World War. This time, however, there is no cavalry, and no sufficiently organised resistance to the social dangers of a new 'softer' totalitarianism that could confront the world. Global resistance to ensure our freedom, whether diplomatic or military, is seen by Europe as being counterproductive, aggressive and reactionary. America is not one coherent nation, but reflects several camps – as is the case with Europe. This fragile democratic strength complicates any simplistic analysis, and at a time when the Europeans constantly seek political correctness (but of a different type to the political correctness inhabiting the USA), we are in constant danger of failing both the larger surrounding world and ourselves. There are strategies that can help, but solutions do not come cheaply.
