This monograph addresses two quite different topics, in the belief that each can shed light on the other. Firstly, it lays the foundation for a particular view of the bootstrap. Secondly, it gives an account of Edgeworth expansion. Chapter 1 is about the bootstrap, witih almost no mention of Edgeworth expansion; Chapter 2 is about Edgeworth expansion, with scarcely a word about the bootstrap; and Chapters 3 and 4 bring these two themes together, using Edgeworth expansion to explore and develop the properites of the bootstrap. The book is aimed a a graduate level audience who has some exposure to the methods of theoretical statistics. However, technical details are delayed until the last chapter (entitled "Details of Mathematical Rogour"), and so a mathematically able reader without knowledge of the rigorous theory of probability will have no trouble understanding the first four-fifths of the book. The book simultaneously fills two gaps in the literature; it provides a very readable graduate level account of the theory of Edgeworth expansion, and it gives a detailed introduction to the theory of bootstrap methods.

In the summer of 1968 one of the present authors (LLC) had the pleasure of giving a sequence of lectures at the University of Mon treal. Lecture notes were collected and written out by Drs. Catherine Doleans, Jean Haezendonck and Roch Roy. They were published in French by the Presses of the University of Montreal as part of their series of Seminaires de Mathematiques Superieures. Twenty years later it was decided that a Chinese translation could be useful, but upon prodding by Professor Shanti Gupta at Purdue we concluded that the notes should be updated and rewritten in English and in Chinese. The present volume is the result of that effort. We have preserved the general outline of the lecture notes, but we have deleted obsolete material and sketched some of the results acquired during the past twenty years. This means that while the original notes concentrated on the LAN situation we have included here some results of Jeganathan and others on the LAMN case. Also included are versions of the Hajek-Le Cam asymptotic minimax and convolution theorems with some of their implications. We have not attempted to give complete coverage of the subject and have often stated theorems without indicating their proofs.

This book provides a unified introduction to a variety of computational algorithms for likelihood and Bayesian inference. In this second edition, I have attempted to expand the treatment of many of the techniques dis cussed, as well as include important topics such as the Metropolis algorithm and methods for assessing the convergence of a Markov chain algorithm. Prerequisites for this book include an understanding of mathematical statistics at the level of Bickel and Doksum (1977), some understanding of the Bayesian approach as in Box and Tiao (1973), experience with condi tional inference at the level of Cox and Snell (1989) and exposure to statistical models as found in McCullagh and Neider (1989). I have chosen not to present the proofs of convergence or rates of convergence since these proofs may require substantial background in Markov chain theory which is beyond the scope ofthis book. However, references to these proofs are given. There has been an explosion of papers in the area of Markov chain Monte Carlo in the last five years. I have attempted to identify key references - though due to the volatility of the field some work may have been missed.

Linear Statistical Models Developed and refined over a period of twenty years, the material in this book offers an especially lucid presentation of linear statistical models. These models lead to what is usually called "multiple regression" or "analysis of variance" methodology, which, in turn, opens up a wide range of applications to the physical, biological, and social sciences, as well as to business, agriculture, and engineering.
