Emily Carr (1871-1945) is an iconic figure in Canadian culture, known internationally for her painting and her writing, which depicted the extraordinary British Columbia mountain landscape along with its indigenous inhabitants and their cultural iconography. Carr's writing career came later in her life, and as it developed, she met Ira Dilworth, the British Columbia Regional Director for CBC Radio who came to play a significant role in her life. Corresponding Influence is a collection of selected correspondence the two shared over the life of their friendship. Over the years, Dilworth acted variously as Carr's editor, writing agent, sounding board, professional and personal advisor, and most importantly, close friend and confidante. The letters provide a narrative for the latter part of Carr's life and illuminate the impression Dilworth made on the development of her writing. In addition to a critical introduction and annotation throughout, editor Linda Morra has included an unpublished story by Carr called "Small's Gold." Corresponding Influence will prove essential reading to anyone hoping to understand Emily Carr's extraordinary life and work.

Wager written by Raymond Barfield and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-03-21 with Philosophy categories.

How do humans explore beauty, virtue, love, justice, and goodness? This book argues that philosophical attention to our lives, shaped in part by our choices, is our instrument for investigating these parts of reality. Constructing a life is a philosophical act. Philosophical acts that are shaped by a life, and that shape a life, constitute philosophical style. Everyone has a philosophical style, which is fundamentally about the way we live in the world through our bodies, our reason, our imagination, and our virtue. It is about what we love and how we are loved. Beauty, suffering, and being in the world are placeholders for everything that makes up our lived experience. As we live our lives between beauty and suffering, we learn most about being in the world. The argument of the book moves from a discussion of philosophical style, through the three placeholders for human experience as they are affected by philosophy (beauty, suffering, and being in the world), arriving at a reworking of Pascal's wager about living in relationship to the presence or absence of God as a way of understanding the commitments that are our only way into the truth of our life.

Author Wilhelm Busch (1832–1908) was a prominent German caricaturist, painter, sculptor and poet. His satirical picture stories with rhymed texts earned him the honorary epithet of Grandfather of Comics. One of his first picture stories, Max and Moritz (1865), was an immediate success and has achieved the status of a popular classic and perennial bestseller. Max and Moritz, as well as many of Busch’s other picture stories, are regarded as one of the primary precursors to the modern comic strip. Busch is also known for his poems, some of which are written in a satirical style similar to his picture stories, while others are of a deeper lyrical character. Translator John Fitzell (1923–2010) was a professor and chair of the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. Born in New York City, he earned his BA and PhD in German at Princeton University. He is the author of the monograph The Hermit in German Literature, from Lessing to Eichendorff (1961), as well as many articles on German literature of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. A talented poet and translator, Dr. Fitzell coauthored a book of poems, Springwurzeln (1980), with his wife, Dr. Ilse Pracht Fitzell. Editor Alexander E. Pichugin was born in Engels, Russia, in 1972. He studied literature in Russia at Saratov State University and in Germany at Friedrich-Alexander University, Erlangen-Nuremberg. He graduated with a PhD in German from the University of Pennsylvania in 2010. He has authored numerous papers on German literature, cinema, and language pedagogy.

After a child’s mutilated body is discovered in a ditch, detective Harry Mason needs to discover whether this gruesome death is the work of a serial murderer or a muti killer butchering children to make powerful ‘medicine’ from their body parts. His police partner, Jacob Chabalala, is forced to reconsider his beliefs as both a tribesman and a cop, becoming increasingly convinced that this time they are dealing with a genuine witch - perhaps powerful enough to subvert the investigation itself. The two friends' relationship deteriorates as the case progresses and cultural tensions grow. They are still no closer to identifying the killer, when a second murder occurs. Meanwhile a young British reporter, Nina Reading, has been conducting her own investigation into slave-trafficking, thus putting herself in deadly danger. Harry's discoveries and Nina's revelations unite and lead them even deeper into an awesome spiritual underworld in Hillbrow, where money and fear reign supreme. But their enemies will stop at nothing to protect their bloody harvests - including the kidnapping of Harry's own child. 'A confident debut ... powerful storytelling' Sunday Telegraph 'A fast and grisly thriller ... hails Kunzmann as an impressive new talent in this genre' Sunday Times
