English summary: In his studies, Hermann Spieckermann deals with the question of the nature and the works of God in the Old Testament. Although when writing them this was not the author's primary intention, in retrospect they all turned out to focus on the question of the feasibility and the concept of a theology of the Old Testament. At the centre of this is the recognition of God's self-determination to love. In the beginning, this love is directed towards his people, the people of Israel, but it soon includes other nations as well. This beautifully produced volume contains twelve essays by the professor of Old Testament at the University of Gottingen. Eleven of the studies have been published previously and one appears for the first time in German. The leitmotif of the essays concerns the possibility and concept of a theology of the OT. ... This is an extremely useful collection which aptly displays S.'s breadth of knowledge and interest and the reader eagerly awaits S.'s OT theology as a whole.A.C. Hagedorn in Book List 2002, S. 179f. This beautifully produced volume contains twelve essays by the professor of Old Testament at the University of Gottingen. The goal of the work is a heuristic reading strategy for a modern reader to engage with YHWH's threats against Israel in Deuteronomy. This goal is accomplished in three steps. First, the biblical text is considered through close reading to discern the logic of YHWH's threats: what motivates the threats, what form the threats take, and what effect the threats expect to produce. Second, a modern analogy is sought that most helpfully matches the structure and logic observed in the biblical text. A number of common modern analogies for the divine-human relationship (e.g., parent-child, master-slave, husband-wife) are deemed unhelpful because they cannot support the features of the biblical pattern. However, the threats of the modern state against those who threaten it are found to bear significant resemblance. Finally, this analogy is developed for each of several significant passages of Deuteronomy. In order to justify and substantiate the analogy, this book examines the religious and political background surrounding both Deuteronomy and the modern state through historical reflection. Since there are significant differences between the religio-political situations, sociological perspectives are used to provide patterns that can be applied within both the ancient and modern contexts. Finally, although the focus of the work is on establishing an analogy between YHWH's threats and those of the modern state, the book dedicates one chapter to discussing dis-analogous features to avoid over-emphasizing the similarity between the two.

Holy Holy Holy written by H. G. M. Williamson and has been published by Walter de Gruyter this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-02-26 with Religion categories.

In one form or another, the Trisagion, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory”, entered Jewish and Christian liturgy at an early stage from Isaiah’s account of his vision as recorded in Isaiah 6. Before that happened, however, it is likely that it went through a significant change of meaning from what the Old Testament prophet himself meant by it. Drawing on material that was familiar to him from the worship of the Jerusalem temple, he used it distinctly but characteristically to challenge his audience’s view that God would automatically protect them from their enemies. In other words, the saying had a threatening rather than an encouraging tone. In the course of the following centuries, however, as the book of Isaiah grew, new reflections on the saying were added in the later chapters, with the result that when the book came to be translated into Greek the translator was justified in rendering the saying in the way that has become familiar to us. The unusual retention of the Hebrew word “Sabaoth”, however, reminds us even today of the long path by which it has reached us from antiquity.

The present volume unites 44 studies to honor Prof. Dr. Dorin Oancea, Romanian-Orthodox theologian and religious studies scholar, well known as a bridge-builder between Eastern and Western Christian Traditions. The manifold studies reflect upon the fundaments of interfaith and inter-confessional openness, offer insightful examples from past and present, or point to the loci where this openness can and should be achieved today. A meaningful collection for all those interested in present day ecumenical theology, in inter-confessional studies or theology of religions.

Through a close semantic analysis of the Hebrew terms hata' and hatta't (commonly translated as 'sin') in Leviticus 4-5, this study reveals their lexical meanings, unknown for two millennia both in Judaism and in Christianity. 'Sin' has been commonly understood as referring mainly to a violation of God's commandment pertaining to personal conduct. However the revision Nobuyoshi Kiuchi proposes for the meanings of the terms has significant and far-reaching implications for other major themes such as uncleanness and atonement, meaning human salvation before God. The author also provides a solution to the question of the relationship between sin and uncleanness.

The volume publishes papers read at the ninth International Conference on the Deuterocanonical Books, Budapest, 2012. The title of the conference and the issuing volume covers an, on the one hand, extremely important and, on the other hand, regrettably neglected aspect particularly of the ancient Jewish and Christian traditions. Traditional manifestations of both Judaism and Christianity are predominantly masculine theological constructions. Despite their harsh masculine orientation, however, neither Judaism nor Christianity lacks elaboration on the female principle. When an ancient author chooses female imagery in order to make his message more emphatic, the female body as such forms an integral part of their metaphors. The contributions in this volume explore this phenomenon within the literature of early Judaism, and within its broad environments.

The character of Saul and his place within the history, theology, and ideology of ancient Israel have fascinated interpreters for centuries. This book surveys the field of Saul studies. It includes in the first instance essays detailing Saul's place within the biblical narrative and its constituent parts (such as the Deuteronomistic History and the Chronicler's work). The possibility of identifying a Saulide period in the archaeological record is also discussed. A number of essays look at more specific themes and passages within the Saul cycle, such as his heroic nature, kingship, war, and literary balance. The final section of the book looks at the place of Saul within the post-biblical interpretative traditions, with essays devoted to Saul in the works of Josephus, in midrashic literature, in the Qur'an, in selected European literary texts, in the western artistic tradition, and in Handel's oratorio Saul. The Building Of The First Temple written by Peter Dubovský and has been published by Mohr Siebeck this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-11-26 with Religion categories.

What can we say about 1 Kings 6-8 that attributes the construction of the temple in its full glory to Solomon? Peter Dubovsky approaches these texts from the diachronic point of view by investigating evidence gathered from the ancient Near East demonstrating that temples were often changed. He analyzes biblical texts indicating that the first temple underwent some important changes. This result leads to the final step of his investigation: he offers a minimalist version of a chronological development of the first temple and ventures to offer a more nuanced model. This conclusion, on the one hand, should be ultimately confronted with the results of archaeological excavation once they become available; on the other hand, this study can point to some nuances that only a text can preserve and no archaeologist can ever unearth.
