It explains to a large extent how these dimensions depend on governance and assesses the impact of governance on the indices of human development and quality of life. Our Environment, Our Wealth is about environment for development to help fight against poverty. Protecting the environment is essential to attain a better life for the people. Whether its about climate change, energy innovation for clean air, forest management, fresh water, or waste, the environment affects all areas of our lives. As the process of globalization continues and power imbalances between decision-making institutions become increasingly apparent, the need for a critical assessment of the way in which we manage our interaction with the natural environment becomes ever more urgent. Good governance was identified at the World Summit on Sustainable Development as a critical factor for ensuring successful sustainable development. This book builds on the briefing papers that were presented at the Summit, taking further the discussions of the WEHAB agenda (Water, Energy, Health, Agriculture and food, and Biodiversity - the five international priority sectors highlighted by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan). This is a unique offering on the role and reform of global institutions and processes, raising issues that have previously been neglected in international discussions.

The establishment of good governance is a major challenge for the developing world, along with the need to sustain the progress resulting from developmental efforts. Although there are numerous studies on the development and governance of emerging nations, few volumes make a serious effort to bring together these two critical concepts. International Development Governance combines the two concepts - development and governance - by examining the issues and problems faced by nations in their attempts to establish sustainable governance. This textbook also initiates discussions on the concept of development governance in an international context. The book fills the gap in existing literature by drawing upon the experience and expertise of scholars from a broad spectrum of knowledge. Their views explain the issues and problems with reference to a number of tools that could establish "development governance" and sustain it. The text offers in-depth examinations of developmental sectors, resulting in a textbook that will inspire future public officials, policy makers, and consultants to contribute to the betterment of life for citizens of developing countries.

This book is about enhancing the contribution of business to sustainable development in sub-Saharan Africa, with an emphasis on both challenges and opportunities. Sub-Saharan Africa is the only region in the world where the proportion of extremely poor people increased during the final decades of the previous century. The overarching imperative to support Africa's poor in their quest for better livelihoods, human rights and environmental integrity, is a huge challenge, and the business community has an important role to play. The purpose of this book is to contribute to a better understanding of this role and its implications for decision-makers in business, as well as, to some extent, government and civil society.--Publisher's description.

This report is the result of a joint project of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the World Bank, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) and the World Conservation Union (Regional Office for Southern Africa) which investigated the threats to precious water resources in southern Africa, and to the environment that sustains them. The full colour, glossy report was intended as a SADC contribution to the United Nations summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002, and to the New Partnership for Africa's Development. The report provides a framework for the sustainable management of water resources, and presents solutions for long-term protection and appropriate utilisation of water in the counties of the region ? the DRC, Angola, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho and South Africa. Some key messages that pervade the report are: firstly that the effective and sustainable utilisation and management of water resources are essential prerequisites for sustaining all forms of life and livelihoods, and for fostering overall socio-economic development and poverty reduction in the region; and that moreover, sustainable water resources management must be balanced between the short-term needs of the people and their human development, and the protection of the natural resource base and environment.

Access to water and sanitation remains a critical challenge in various countries in Africa. The crisis remains the crisis of governance rather than the physical and economic scarcity. In most countries, water is realized as a human right and subsidies are provided for the indigent households. The tricky issue in rural areas remains an issue of access that is often linked to willingness and ability to pay for the installation and daily consumption. The Handbook of Research on Resource Management and the Struggle for Water Sustainability in Africa presents practical examples of integrated water resources management (IWRM) implementation in African countries. It further addresses the contemporary issues of alternative energy as part of climate change mitigation and utilizes case studies to examine how communities adapt to climate change. Covering topics such as climate justice, ecological governance, and political ecology, this major reference work is a dynamic resource for government officials, sociologists, climate scientists, activists, students and educators of higher education, academicians, and researchers in the fields of social sciences, government, developmental studies, international relations, and political science.
