This report examines the progress made by the Government, since 2002, in delivering services and information online. It examines three main areas: the quality of online provision; how it is organised and its cost; and future developments and strategy. The recommendations aim to help departments assess the costs and benefits of online provision, improve its quality, and encourage and assist citizens to use the services. Overall some £208 million is spent each year on website provision, with many positive signs of well used services but there is further potential for value for money gains. The planned transition to focus heavily on two supersites (Direct.gov.uk and businesslink.gov.uk) is an ambitious undertaking that would be the first of its kind in the world. It needs to be managed carefully.

Understanding E Government written by Vincent Homburg and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-08-28 with Business & Economics categories.

Governments these days often boast about the efficiency of their electronic systems. Information communication technologies (ICTs) apparently allow public service to become cheaper, faster and more democratic. E-government has become another buzzword, the shining future of the public realm. Critics claim, however, that ICTs’ potential for democratic renewal is hampered by ancient assumptions of how governments should function. But which viewpoint is nearer the truth? In this original and insightful volume, Vincent Homburg demonstrates how the use, form and impact of ICTs are, in fact, entwined within the socio-political, economic and institutional aspects already established by government and public administration. Evangelical or fatalistic perspectives are discredited to show the different realities in which ICTs play a role in our daily lives. Using case studies and vignettes from throughout Europe and the US, the book analyzes what these new technologies actually do, and how they are screened through varying layers of bureaucracy and convention. This is a timely addition to our understanding of what is meant by e-government. It gets behind the political rhetoric. Understanding E-Government: Information Systems in Public Administration will be key reading for all students of public administration, political science, organization theory and information systems.

While societies have always had information infrastructures, the power and reach of today's information technologies offer opportunities to transform work and family lives in an unprecedented fashion. This volume, a collection of six papers presented at the 1994 National Academy of Engineering Meeting Technical Session, presents a range of views on the subject of the revolution in the U.S. information infrastructure. The papers cover a variety of current issues including an overview of the technological developments driving the evolution of information infrastructures and where they will lead; the development of the Internet, particularly the government's role in its evolution; the impact of regulatory reform and antitrust enforcement on the telecommunications revolution; and perspectives from the computer, wireless, and satellite communications industries.
