Gradisil is a multi-generational story of murder, betrayal and revenge. It is told through the eyes of three characters and against a background where mankinds rush into space has faded away leaving individual pioneers to force their way independently into space after the collapse of the big government space agencies. They ride up into space on the lines of electromagnetic force that flower into space from earth like the mighty Yggradisil - the earth tree of Norse myth. Leaving their weight behind they still carry a cargo of enmities and hatreds. Roberts has a unique approach to SF and is one of the genre's premier stylists. This is one of his most original novels yet.

Canary Fever is a collection of reviews about the most significant literatures of the twenty-first century: science fiction, fantasy and horror: the literatures Clute argues should be recognized as the central modes of fantastika in our times. The title refers to the canary in the coal mine, who whiffs gas and dies to save miners; reviewers of fantastika can find themselves in a similar position, though words can only hurt us.

'No one writing today is better than McDevitt at combining galaxy-spanning adventure with the genuine novel of ideas' Washington Post Book World Two hundred years ago, humans made a stunning discovery in the far reaches of the solar system: a huge statue of an alien creature, with an inscription that defied all efforts at translation. Now, as faster-than-light drive opens the stars to exploration, humans are finding other relics of the race they call the Monument-Makers - each different, and each heartbreakingly beautiful. But except for a set of footprints on Jupiter's moon Iapetus, there is no trace of the enigmatic race that has left them behind. Then a team of scientists working on a dead world discover an ominous new image of the Monument-Makers. Somehow it all fits with other lost civilizations, and possibly with Earth's own future. And distant past. But Earth itself is on the brink of ecological disaster - there is no time to search for answers. Even to a question that may hold the key to survival for the entire human race.

Going boldly forth as a pioneer in the fledgling field of space archaeology, Dr Alice Gorman (aka Dr Space Junk) turns the common perception of archaeology as an exploration of the ancient on its head. Her captivating inquiry into the most modern and daring of technologies spanning some 60 years — a mere speck in cosmic terms — takes the reader on a journey which captures the relics of space forays and uncovers the cultural value of detritus all too readily dismissed as junk. In this book, she takes a physical journey through the solar system and beyond, and a conceptual journey into human interactions with space. Her tools are artefacts, historical explorations, the occasional cocktail recipe, and the archaeologist’s eye applied not only to the past, but the present and future as well. Erudite and playful, Dr Space Junk reveals that space is not as empty as we might think. And that by looking up and studying space artefacts, we learn an awful lot about our own culture on earth. She makes us realise that objects from the past — the material culture produced by the Space Age and beyond — are so significant to us now because they remind us of what we might want to hold onto into the future. ‘As charming as it is expert, as gripping as it is surprising, Dr Space Junk vs The Universe deftly threads together the cosmic and the personal, the stupendousness of space with the lived experience of human beings down here.’ — Adam Roberts, author of Gradisil

In a world where we have been genetically engineered so that we can photosynthesise sunlight with our hair, hunger is a thing of the past, food an indulgence. The poor grow their hair, the rich affect baldness and flaunt their wealth by still eating. But other hungers remain ... The young daughter of an affluent New York family is kidnapped. The ransom demands are refused. A year later a young woman arrives at the family home claiming to be their long lost daughter. She has changed so much, she has lived on light, can anyone be sure that she has come home? Adam Roberts' new novel is yet another amazing melding of startling ideas and beautiful prose. Set in a New York of the future it nevertheless has echoes of a Fitzgeraldesque affluence and art-deco style. It charts his further progress as one of the most important writers of his generation.

But now the French have formed a regiment of previously peaceful Brobdingnagian giants and invasion looms. In a world where humanity is both smaller and larger than it once was, love and hate loom large. Mankind discovers itself at the centre of scale. Lilliputians are twelve times smaller than us but there are those twelve times smaller than them, and twelve times smaller again and so on. And the scale of being goes up from Swift's giants also ... Adam Roberts has written both a rip roaring 19th century adventure, a love story and a thought-provoking pre-atomic SF novel about our place in the universe.

THE LAND OF THE HEADLESS is set in a far future where mankind has taken his religious dogma and the divsions that result from it out into space. Found guilty he must face the punishment laid down in the Good Book; beheading. Beheaded, he is fitted with a neck valve, ordinator and basic sensory equipment and sent out into the world. But he bears a terrible and very visible stigma. the only way he can make a living is to join the army and serve in the war against the neighbouring planet. And plan his revenge against the man he believes is really guilty. LAND OF THE HEADLESS is a searing satire of religious fundamentalism, a novel of love and war and a study of self-delusion. It is an elegantly written, thought-provoking and unique SF novel.

Salt written by Adam Roberts and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-11-04 with Fiction categories.

Two narrators tell the story of the simmering tensions between their two communities as they travel out to a new planet, colonise it, then destroy themselves when the tensions turn into outright war. Adam Roberts is a new writer completely in command of the SF genre. This is a novel that is at once entertaining and philosophical. The attitudes and prejudices of its characters are subtlety drawn and ring completely true despite the alien circumstances they find themselves in. The grasp of science and its impact on people is instinctive. But above all it is the epic and colourful world building that marks SALT out - the planet Salt rivals Dune in its desolation and is a suitably biblical setting for a novel that is powered by the corrupting influence of imperfectly remembered religions on distant societies. From the early scenes set on a colony ship towed by a massive ice meteorite, to the description of a planet covered in sodium chloride, to the chilling narrative of a world sliding into its first war, this is a novel from a writer who shouts star quality.

Boundaries written by Jenni Ramone and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Literary Criticism categories.

Boundaries is a collection of work offering creative and critical responses to methods of making, breaking, and negotiating boundaries. The concern of this book is not simply to address the theme of boundaries; we also hope to breach the boundaries surrounding the usual ways that such a theme would ordinarily be debated. As such, this collection includes papers from both arts and science disciplines including literary, theatrical, historical, linguistic, educational, travel writing and geographical perspectives, from academics, postgraduate research students, postgraduate creative writers, and creative writers without institutional affiliation. The book is interdisciplinary in its approach, and boundary-crossing in its presentation: instead of organising the collection in sections of papers according to whether they are predominantly creative or critical in approach, the papers are presented together, and are organised in three sections according to the way that those papers approach the boundary that they perceive: whether that boundary is being made, negotiated, or broken. In addition to the main papers in the three sections, the collection is framed by interviews with the plenary speakers who were invited to the conference, Adam Roberts and Hanan Al-Shaykh. These are writers whose works repeatedly deal with boundaries of form, genre, and audience, and the interviews included here start to explore the range of boundaries existing in their work and in their lives as writers. The format of their contribution to this book allows another boundary to be crossed, by including formal, structured interviews as another medium of developing the debate. Taking the principle that the idea of the boundary is, in fact and in imagination, boundless, Jenni Ramone and Gemma Twitchen gather together in Boundaries sixteen texts that stage in adventurous and provocative ways the endless reconceptualisation of this most enigmatic of concepts. Boundaries is at once a startling reassessment and necessary reorientation around its subject, in which critical acuity and creative panache cross and recross the borders of imaginative space. To say that this is a boundary-breaking collection, that frontiers have been transgressed, limits erased and hitherto invisible liminal territories mapped, is only to draw a line underneath the limitless inventiveness of the transgressive and translative interventions of this volume. The reader of Boundaries will find herself bound in a nutshell that makes her a ruler of infinite space. Ramone and Twitchen are to be applauded for redrawing the map and erasing the borders between the critical, the creative and the cultural, with such passion and precision. Julian Wolfreys, author of Writing London: Inventions of the City â oeMake, break, negotiate - or, if you will, here are three impossible things to do with conceptual boundaries and all before breakfast, or at least middle-age; so say the exciting collective of young scholars, critics and writers who come together here. The result is much brilliant making, breaking and negotiating of all sorts of boundaries - but above all the boundary between the critical and the creative. Nothing could be more timely, or important.â John Schad, Professor of Modern Literature, University of Lancaster
