La importancia del idioma copto se debe en parte a que es el único que nos da en ciertos casos la posibilidad de beber de las fuentes que son especialmente instructivas para la historia del espíritu humano en una determinada época. En primer lugar pensamos en las obras gnósticas maniqueas originales, que hasta ahora sólo se hallan en copto. Así, pues, sólo el conocedor del copto está en situación de penetrar en estas interesantes e importantes corrientes del espíritu directamente, sin intermediarios extraños, de las fuentes verdaderas. Aparte de la restante literatura existente en lengua copta, importante principalmente para la historia del Cristianismo primitivo y la crítica textual de la Biblia, tenemos ante todo los textos no literarios, los documentos y cartas, que nos dan una visión directa de la historia del derecho y la cultura. Además el copto es de capital importancia para los lingüistas, debido a que es el último eslabón del idioma egipcio, cuyos cambios podemos conocer a lo largo de casi cuatro mil años sin solución de continuidad. Un valor especial le da al copto el hecho de que con él se escribió por primera vez la lengua egipcia con sus mismas vocales. En la presentación del copto me he limitado al idioma literario en sahídico. Trato del idioma vulgar y de los otros dialectos sólo ocasionalmente. Lo que es interesante del copto para el principiante, además de la literatura sahídica, depende de aquello a lo que se vaya a dedicar. El que domine el sahídico, puede sin más familiarizarse con los demás dialectos coptos. Puede servir, pues, para ello de auxiliar mi gramática dialectal abreviada. (Adolf Erman)
