"Mit vorliegendem Werke wollte ich ein doppeltes Versprechen einlosen. Erstlich habe ich Herrn Pott offentlich versprochen, das Verhaltnis der Grammatik zur Logik ausfuhrlich zu erortern; und zweitens war meine Schrift Der Ursprung der Sprache" ein stillschweigendes Versprechen, die daselbst gestellte Aufgabe zu ubernehmen. Bei der Untersuchung uber den Ursprung der Sprache zumal wollte ich die Aufgabe in ihrer grossten Einfachheit, in ihrer reinsten Gestalt bearbeiten, abgelost von allen Problemen, die sich an sie knupfen, aber wesentlich anderen Gedankenkreisen angehoren. Was nun endlich die Darstellung betrifft, so hoffe ich, vorliegendes Buch werde klarer sein, als alles, was ich fruher veroffentlicht habe, sowohl wegen der Ausfuhrlichkeit, als auch wegen der bessern Form."
