Antonio Francesco Gramsci (1891-1937) was an Italian Marxist philosopher and communist politician. He wrote on political theory, sociology and linguistics. He attempted to break from the economic determinism of traditional Marxist thought and so is considered a key neo-Marxist.[3] He was a founding member and one-time leader of the Communist Party of Italy and was imprisoned by Benito Mussolini's Fascist regime. He wrote more than 30 notebooks and 3,000 pages of history and analysis during his imprisonment. His Prison Notebooks are considered a highly original contribution to 20th century political theory. Gramsci drew insights from varying sources - not only other Marxists but also thinkers such as Niccolò Machiavelli, Vilfredo Pareto, Georges Sorel and Benedetto Croce. Malgrado i tre quarti di secolo trascorsi ormai dalla sua morte, si continua a scrivere molto su Gramsci. Fu sempre Togliatti, finché fu in vita, a decidere cosa rendere pubblico dell'opera e della storia di Gramsci. Solo grazie a dirigenti comunisti «eretici» o espulsi qualcosa riuscì a trapelare. Scomparso Togliatti non fu comunque possibile affermare esplicitamente quello che ormai appariva sempre più evidente: nell'ottobre 1926, la rottura tra Gramsci e Togliatti ci fu e fu radicale. Si è dovuto attendere oltre settanta anni dalla morte di Gramsci, e molto tempo dopo la caduta del muro di Berlino e lo scioglimento del Pci, per giungere alla verità. Mauro Canali la ricostruisce e fa chiarezza sulle ragioni, le complicità, i tentativi della cognata di Gramsci, Tatiana Schucht, per portare a galla i fatti, i mezzi con cui Togliatti riuscì a legittimarsi come assertore del pensiero gramsciano, e perciò suo naturale erede politico, e a dissimulare, nel contempo, la persistente fedeltà allo stato sovietico dietro la parola d'ordine, mutuata dalle riflessioni gramsciane, della «via nazionale al socialismo». Questo libro scopre le carte e permette di passare dall'immagine del Gramsci "togliattiano" alla realtà che emerge dalla documentazione proveniente dal fondo Gramsci, nella fattispecie le preziose lettere inedite di Tatiana Schucht alla famiglia. La personalità di Togliatti che affiora dalla vicenda Gramsci è quella di un uomo politico intelligente quanto scaltro, capace di adattarsi ai grandi mutamenti di cui fu ricca l'epoca in cui visse e che riuscì ad andarsene senza aver detto la verità sui suoi reali rapporti col vecchio compagno di lotta.
