My paternal grandfather was an Australian soldier injured during the First World War. He met my grandmother whilst convalescing in Leicester, they married and had two children. Unfortunately, my grandfather found it difficult to settle in England and after ten years returned to Australia taking his three year old son with him. My grandmother would not go with him and remained in Leicester, pregnant with my father. She never saw her husband or eldest child again. This was all I knew about my grandfather, apart from his name, Thomas Johnstone and his son was named Archie. On the one hundredth anniversary of the start of the First World War, I determined to track him down, to find out who he was and whether the family story of him was true or not. This is the story of my search and the amazing discoveries I made, which would give me a greater insight into my ancestor’s past and the repercussions the First World War had on them. It would take me half way around the world and bring heartache and joy. It is a story that will inspire you to look into your own pasts because the First World War touched everybody’s life and the lives of their future generations. It is only now that people feel they can ask how the war affected their ancestors and to discover the truth that the people, who experienced it, were unable to talk about it.

Across our country, there are numerous historic steam railroads that transport passengers through beautiful landscapes and stunning vistas. The steam railroad in my town, Ft. Bragg, CA, is no exception. Built in the late 1800's to carry lumber from the coast mainly to other parts of California, the railroad has transformed into a visitor attraction in the region, appealing to people all over the world. What started as three small, diesel "rail buses," (called "Skunks" because "you could smell 'em before you could see "em) has now been replaced with a classic steam engine, historically preserved and fully functional. Over 70,000 tourists come every year to enjoy the curvy, scenic ride through the mighty redwood trees, over creaking, wooden trestles, and through dark hand-dug tunnels. This book is told by a grandpa to his grandson, relating his own personal experiences as its conductor, engineer, and brakeman - how the story unfolded and became a reality.

This scientific biography of Douglas R Hartree not only describes important events in his life but also outlines his contributions to a number of fields. He is best known for his “self-consistent field” theory for atoms, a theory he later used for the much more difficult problem of predicting the behavior of a magnetron. When Fock pre-empted his work on exchange, he began research into radio-wave propagation. Hartree was very interested in the process of computation. When he learned of a differential analyzer for solving differential equations, he first built a model using Meccano, a toy for children. The success of this model spread the notion of using devices to solve scientific problems. Application of the analyzer led Hartree to control theory and fluid dynamics. In both these areas he made significant, original contributions. With his extensive computing background, he was selected as the first civilian to evaluate the possibility of applying the US ENIAC computer to nonmilitary problems. His research touched the lives of many scientists.

The Douglases are traced from 100 A.D. with ancestral background in Ireland around 300 B.C. There is an American branch from the 18th century with connections to the U.S. war of independence and the anti-slave movement. The Crawfords are shown in their early history around the 12th century, then since the early 19th Century in Scotland, Ireland and New Zealand. The Clarks are shown since the mid 19thcentury but with strong Huguenot roots in the 17th century. The Gagens are traced from Germany to Norfolk in the U.K. in the 17th century; and to Canada and America in the 19th, where Dan Gagen married into the Chippewa tribe. The book is about Cyril Gagen who settled in New Zealand with his mid-wife mother in the early 20th century, and is written by his grandson. The last chapter is autobiographical with an in-depth discussion on Social Control and the ethics of its use in modern Britain and New Zealand. The Clarion review states that the book is anti-monarchist which is totally incorrect.
