Narratore e protagonista, Pip ripercorre in queste pagine, con voce meditativa, ma vibrante di humour e di passione, il suo cammino di conoscenza e disillusione, facendo i conti con la propria protratta cecità di fronte ai casi della vita. Da questo romanzo è stato tratto il film Paradiso perduto di Alfonso Cuarón, con Gwyneth Paltrow e Robert De Niro. Charles Dickens nacque a Portsmouth nel 1812. Trascorse l’infanzia a Chatham e poi seguì il padre nel traumatico trasferimento a Londra. Da allora la metropoli fu non solo la sua residenza abituale ma anche l’insostituibile centro ispiratore della sua arte. Morì nel 1870. Di Dickens la Newton Compton ha pubblicato David Copperfield, Il Circolo Pickwick, Le due città, Racconti di Natale e, nella collana GTE, Oliver Twist, Tempi difficili e Grandi speranze.
