This paper looks at Ulysses S. Grant’s development as a strategic leader with emphasis on the time period July, 1863, to March, 1864. It has a dual focus. The first is an examination of Grant’s growth as a strategic thinker. The second is on the opening of opportunity for Grant to become a leader at the strategic level. The paper is written chronologically, with both subjects interwoven. Bruce Catton, Lloyd Lewis, Carl Sandburg, and T. Harry Williams wrote the primary sources used in research and provided a good balance of “Grant-centric” and “Lincoln-centric” views. Whenever possible, The Official Records of the Rebellion were used. Care was taken to use source material written during the Civil War. Sherman’s war time views of Grant’s abilities carry more weight in this paper than what he wrote after the war. Similarly, Grant’s Memoirs were read with a jaundiced eye. The findings of the research are laid out in the body of the paper. Grant’s career is reviewed in order to show a steady progression of ability. There is also a noticeable maturation in Grant’s strategic thinking that can be seen in the period highlighted. Finally, incidents are examined in which Grant proved himself to President Lincoln to be a perceptive, adept actor in the politics of high level command, earning Lincoln’s trust and confidence. The conclusion of the paper is that just when the nation called for him, Grant had developed the essential skills for the job of general-in-chief.

Developing And Leading Emergence Teams written by Peter A.C. Smith and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-10 with Business & Economics categories.

Developing and Leading Emergence Teams describes a future business landscape that seems to be complicated, complex and chaotic, in almost equal measures. The variety and diversity of the environments within which large organizations will be seeking to operate, require a similar variety of systems, process and structures if they are to respond successfully to emerging opportunities. The established models of teamworking (matrix, cross-functional or transdisciplinary) can all adapt to this new environment but will only do so if the culture, leadership and management style of the business enables this. The authors describe a model of emergence teams; high-trust teams that exhibit exceptional affinity for knowledge sharing, sense making, and consensus building. They then explore the specifics of leading such a team, how the team leader should: design the team; interact and facilitate the team’s development; understand the personal nature of each of the team members and the overall emotional regime that will affect trust, commitment and motivation. Peter Smith and Tom Cockburn draw on research and detailed case examples to provide techniques your organization can adopt in order to build and support the various teams capable of addressing complexity.

We’ve all heard of the Great Depression. Many of us went through the Great Recession. Now, whether we know it or not, all of us are taking part in the Great Transition—a state of unpredictability and change driven by technology and consumers. The speed of which in the coming decade, will be unprecedented. It is already disrupting social, economic and political order. Career and business lives, in all industries, are being equally challenged to change and adapt faster. The rules have changed and will continue to evolve, making it much more difficult to transition from the old economy to the new one. The leaders who are driving this change are unconventional; that’s why they can disrupt entire industries, sometimes seemingly overnight. This book is a much-needed prescription on how to transition your leadership skills and business to become unconventionally competitive. Unconventional leadership today isn’t about thinking out of the box; it is about how to compete outside the box. Here’s the catch, there’s only a small window of time to adapt and successfully transition into that unconventional arena where we compete for jobs and business growth. There are valuable lessons to be learned by understanding how some small companies have lasted hundreds of years and a small handful for over one thousand years, through all kinds of disruptions—social, political, economic, technological, and environmental. You will learn how to build a different kind of company, through the five disciplines of growth, the reliability quotient, and the COST principles, all of which will lead you to a higher level of competitive performance and resilience to threats. The Great Transition offers a groundbreaking view of leadership and how to participate in this new economy. Join business leader and author George Minakakis as he shares the leadership skills and competencies required to succeed in the new economy.

Theoretical Perspectives Of Strategic Followership written by David Baniyelme Zoogah and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-10-25 with Business & Economics categories.

The concept of followership, like leadership, is not new to the extent that it has been around since the beginning of creation. It is so pervasive in human interactions that attempts to study it are often met with ridicule. In the organization literature, followership, a complementary role to leadership, was often ignored until recently when scholars observed that followers have as much a role to play in the leader-follower relationship. Theoretical Perspectives of Strategic Followership focuses on one type of followership – strategic – which is an emergent phenomenon. Similar to leadership, followership has been defined as a role, process, and capacity. Indeed, others consider it as socially constructed. In addition to the definitions, the relatively sparse literature has identified antecedents, outcomes, and moderators of followership. The book combines both the macro (strategic management) and micro (psychological) foundations of strategic followership to encourage research not only among strategic management scholars but also those in the micro fields of organizational behaviour, human resources management, and industrial psychology.
