Graphene is an ideal 2D material that breaks the fundamental properties of size and speed limits by photonics and electronics, respectively. Graphene is also an ideal material for bridging electronic and photonic devices. Graphene offers several functions of modulation, emission, signal transmission, and detection of wideband and short band infrared frequency spectrum. Graphene has improved human life in multiple ways of low-cost display devices and touchscreen structures, energy harvesting devices (solar cells), optical communication components (modulator, polarizer, detector, laser generation). There is numerous literature is available on graphene synthesis, properties, devices, and applications. However, the main interest among the scientist, researchers, and students to start with the numerical and computational process for the graphene-based nanophotonic devices. This chapter also includes the examples of graphene applications in optoelectronics devices, P-N junction diodes, photodiode structure which are fundamental devices for the solar cell and the optical modulation.

Nanophotonics has emerged as a major technology and applications domain, exploiting the interaction of light-emitting and light-sensing nanostructured materials. These devices are lightweight, highly efficient, low on power consumption, and are cost effective to produce. The authors of this book have been involved in pioneering work in manufacturing photonic devices from carbon nanotube (CNT) nanowires and provide a series of practical guidelines for their design and manufacture, using processes such as nano-robotic manipulation and assembly methods. They also introduce the design and operational principles of opto-electrical sensing devices at the nano scale. Thermal annealing and packaging processes are also covered, as key elements in a scalable manufacturing process. Examples of applications of different nanowire based photonic devices are presented. These include applications in the fields of electronics (e.g. FET, CNT Schotty diode) and solar energy. Discusses opto-electronic nanomaterials, characterization and properties from an engineering perspective, enabling the commercialization of key emerging technologies Provides scalable techniques for nanowire structure growth, manipulation and assembly (i.e. synthesis) Explores key application areas such as sensing, electronics and solar energy

A disadvantage of the use of noble metals in photonic circuits is that the SPPs propagation length is small, because of the absorptive nature of the metals regarding the light, in the frequency range used in telecommunications (from infrared until the visible light). A new material, called graphene, has electrical/optical properties more suitable for photonics than the noble metals. Thereafter, graphene is attracting the attention of researchers who work in the fields of nanotechnology and nanophotonics, due to its exceptional optical and electrical properties, as, for example, mobility, high current density at room temperature, controlled conductivity, exceptional flexibility and extraordinary thermal conductivity. Taking into account the above written, we believe that graphene-based nanophotonics should lead to a revolution in the area of optics, in the same way that the current integrated circuits technology caused in the area of electronics. Therefore, everything leads us to believe, that in the next decade should arise graphene-based photonic integrated circuits (GPICs) operating from the range of teraHertz until the infrared.
