This book examines public oath taking as an anti-corruption strategy that has been implemented with successful results in Nigeria and that has applications for other countries struggling with similar problems. The author of the book is the founder of Association of Nigerians against Corruption (ANAC), the NGO that first piloted the oath taking program—in which people swear publically not to either take or receive bribes. Drawing on the experiences of the program and interviews with a number of ANAC participants, the author sheds light on some of the dynamics that underlie corruption, the potential of oath taking, and the importance of grassroots efforts and individual moral agency as forces of change.

The inside story of the first successful $15 minimum wage campaign that renewed a national labor movement With captivating narrative and insightful commentary, labor organizer Jonathan Rosenblum reveals the inside story of the first successful fight for a $15 minimum wage, which renewed a national labor movement through bold strategy and broad inclusiveness. Just outside Seattle, an unlikely alliance of Sea-Tac Airport workers, union and community activists, and clergy staged face-to-face confrontations with corporate leaders to unite a diverse, largely immigrant workforce in a struggle over power between airport workers and business and political elites. Digging deep into the root causes of poverty wages, Rosenblum gives a blunt assessment of the daunting problems facing unions today. Beyond $15 provides an inspirational blueprint for a powerful, all-inclusive labor movement and is a call for workers to reclaim their power in the new economy.

Beyond the Frame explores the importance of visual images in the identities and material conditions of women of color as they relate to social power, oppression, and resistance. The goal of the collection is to rethink the category of visual theory through women of color. It also explores the political and social ramifications of visual imagery for women of color, and the political consciousness that can emerge alongside a critical understanding of the impact of visual imagery. The book begins with a general exploration of what it means to develop a women of color criticism (rather than an analysis of women of color), and goes on to look specifically at topics such as 90s fashion advertisements, the politics of cosmetic surgery, and female fans of East LA rock bands.

As trade and production have increasingly crossed international boundaries, private bodies and governments alike have sought new ways to regulate labour standards and advance goals of fairness and social justice. Governments are harnessing social and market forces to advance corporate accountability, while private bodies are employing techniques drawn from command and control regulation to shape the behaviour of business. This collection brings together the research and reflections of a diverse international mix of academics, activists and practitioners in the fields of fair trade and corporate accountability, representing perspectives from both the industrialized and developing worlds. Contributors provide detailed case studies of a range of social justice governance initiatives, documenting the evolution of established strategies of advocacy and social mobilization, and evaluating the strengths and limitations of voluntary initiatives compared with legally enforceable instruments.

There is a lot of information available on governance, risk and compliance as separate subjects but little on the interrelation between the three components known in the industry as enterprise-wide governance, risk and compliance (eGRC). This book brings eGRC to the reader in a way that starts with simple concepts and builds on them to provide insight and a practical guide for a holistic approach to eGRC. Companies have to manage risk in order to remain a sustainable force in the marketplace. Efforts to reduce risk can, unintentionally, be uncoordinated, disjointed or even neglected. Through not implementing a more cohesive and systematic approach to managing risk, opportunities to benefit the company can also be missed. Beyond Play offers a practical and simple approach. Compliance is a very specific form of risk: that of complying with the law, but the role of the compliance officer includes a lot more. Working with the law and regulators and applying a compliance methodology are explained to provide value to learners, compliance officers, managers, prescribed officers and directors. Many companies play at corporate governance, probably because it is perceived as being too big to grasp. This book will change your thinking and will help directors pave the way for implementing a framework that can be worked with on a practical level within an enterprise wide risk management context. The systemic nature of risk means it can spread to customers, shareholders, communities and economies as the credit bubble of 2008 has proved. Equally, a company that applies a robust an intelligent approach to eGRC has a positive influence on the marketplace, the community and a nation. Do you believe that your business, whether for profit or not for profit and on the basis on which it currently operates, is sustainable in an increasingly dynamic world? This book uses examples from the financial services industry; it also makes reference to South African legislation and governance codes. These references do, however, focus on international best practices so the methodologies can be universally applied. Governance, risk and compliance is an integrated concept to be incorporated within an enterprise risk framework which helps an organisation, either private or public, for profit or non profit, to direct its strategies and operations with integrity and within the law; the reason being to achieve its goals in such a way that its stakeholders and the economy as a whole are never compromised or put at risk beyond that which has been carefully defined and deemed acceptable.

Beyond Mainstream Explanations Of The Financial Crisis written by Ismael Hossein-zadeh and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-04-16 with Business & Economics categories.

This book provides a critique of the neoclassical explanations of the 2008 financial collapse, of the ensuing long recession and of the neoliberal austerity responses to it. The study argues that while the prevailing views of deregulation and financialization as instrumental culprits in the explosion and implosion of the financial bubble are not false, they fail to point out that financialization is essentially an indication of an advanced stage of capitalist development. These standard explanations tend to ignore the systemic dynamics of the accumulation of finance capital, the inherent limits to that accumulation, production and division of economic surplus, class relations, and the balance of social forces that mold economic policy. Instead of simply blaming the ‘irrational behavior’ of market players, as neoliberals do, or lax public supervision, as Keynesians do, this book focuses on the core dynamics of capitalist development that not only created the financial bubble, but also fostered the ‘irrational behavior’ of market players and subverted public policy. Due to its interdisciplinary perspective, this book will be of interest to students and researchers in economics, finance, politics and sociology.
