The effects of season and precipitacion on the crude protein, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium contents of native range grasses from sandy and red sandy loam range in south Texas were determined and these data were used to determine the critical periods of protein and mineral deficiency in beef cattle. Grasses were sampled monthly from september 1975 to august 1977; 15 grasses from the sandy site and 6 from the red sandy Loam site. Livestock grazing the grasses from the either site would probably need supplemental feeding of protein and K from december through february or early march. Year-round supplemental feeding of P, Mg, and Na would be recommended on both sites.

A Photographic Guide To The Vegetation Of The South Texas Sand Sheet written by Dexter Peacock and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020 with Plants categories.

The South Texas Sand Sheet, also known as the Coastal Sand Plains and the Llano Meste o, is a vast region covering more than two million acres at the southern tip of the state, just north of the Lower Rio Grande Valley. The landscape's distinctive feature is the dunes created from sheets of sand blown inland from the shoreline of an ancient sea. Highly diverse native plant communities help make it one of the state's most cherished ecological regions as well as the premier hunting region in the world for northern bobwhites. The Sand Sheet is a constantly shifting semi-arid landscape, shaped by wind, ranching, energy production, and, increasingly, by growing urban populations surrounding the region. Organized with the nonbotanist or beginning-level botanist in mind, A Photographic Guide to the Vegetation of the South Texas Sand Sheet includes 200 of the most common grasses, flowering plants, vines, cacti, and woody plants of the South Texas Sand Sheet, 56 of which are species endemic to Texas and 15 of which can only be found in this region. Species are grouped by physical appearance, allowing budding naturalists, landowners, and students to find a specific plant without needing to first understand how families and species are grouped scientifically. Each plant entry includes a representative sampling of photos for that species, showing how it might look from a distance, up close, and at different stages of its life cycle. This handy snapshot of plant life in the South Texas Sand Sheet will enable anyone to easily identify Sand Sheet plants, learn more about their uses, and understand their value to the region.

The Rio Grande Delta is fabulously rich in wildflowers and other plant life. Lying in the geographically and environmentally diverse region common to southern Texas and northern Mexico, it supports plants that also grow in Central America and throughout Mexico, the Gulf Coastal plains, the South Texas Plains, and the Chihuahuan Desert. Plants of the Rio Grande Delta provides an accessible and reliable identification guide to all of the plants, excluding grasses, of the region—some 823 species. In clear, nontechnical language, Alfred Richardson gives a brief description of each species, along with its range, habitat, and general blooming time. Over two hundred superb color photographs offer quick and easy field identification, while line drawings illustrate notable characteristics of the plants. This volume expands and updates Alfred Richardson's previous book, Plants of Southernmost Texas, published in 1990 by the Gorgas Science Foundation. It will be an essential field guide for everyone interested in South Texas flora, from winter visitors and Valley residents to professional botanists.
