This symposium continued the tradition of mid-term meetings held between the joint symposia of International Geoid and Gravity Commissions. This time, geodynamics was chosen as the third topic to accompany the traditional topics of gravity and geoid. The symposium thus aimed at bringing together geodesists and geophysicists working in the general areas of gravity, geoid and geodynamics. Besides covering the traditional research areas, special attention was paid to the use of geodetic methods for geodynamics studies, dedicated satellite missions, airborne surveys, geodesy and geodynamics of arctic regions, and the integration of geodetic and geophysical information.

These Proceedings include the written version of papers presented at the IAG International Symposium on "Gravity, Geoid and Earth Observation 2008". The Symposium was held in Chania, Crete, Greece, 23-27 June 2008 and organized by the Laboratory of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering, Technical University of Crete, Greece. The meeting was arranged by the International Association of Geodesy and in particular by the IAG Commission 2: Gravity Field. The symposium aimed at bringing together geodesists and geophysicists working in the general areas of gravity, geoid, geodynamics and Earth observation. The lAG International Symposium on Gravity, Geoid, and Space Missions 2004 (GGSM2004) was lield in the beautiful city of Porto, Portugal, from 30 August to 3 September 2004. This symposium encompassed the themes of Commission 2 (Gravity Field) of the newly structured lAG, as well as interdisciplinary topics related to geoid and gravity modeling, with special attention given to the current and planned gravi- dedicated satellite missions. The symposium also followed in the tradition of mid-term meetings that were held between the quadrennial joint meetings of the International Geoid and Gravity Commissions. The previous mid-term meetings were the International Symposia on Gravity, Geoid, and Marine Geodesy (Tokyo, 1996), and Gravity, Geoid, and Geodynamics (Banff, 2000). GGSM2004 aimed to bring together scientists from different areas in the geosciences, working with gravity and geoid related problems, both from the theoretical and practical points of view. Topics of interest included the integration of heterogeneous data and contributions from satellite and airborne techniques to the study of the spatial and temporal variations of the gravity field. In addition to the special focus on the CHAMP, GRACE, and GOCE satellite missions, attention was also directed toward projects addressing topographic and ice field mapping using SAR, LIDAR, and laser altimetry, as well as missions and studies related to planetary geodesy.

Currently, a first generation of dedicated satellite missions for the precise mapping of the Earth’s gravity field is in orbit (CHAMP, GRACE, and soon GOCE). The gravity data from these satellite missions provide us with very new information on the dynamics of planet Earth. In particular, on the mass distribution in the Earth’s interior, the entire water cycle (ocean circulation, ice mass balance, continental water masses, and atmosphere), and on changes in the mass distribution. The results are fascinating, but still rough with respect to spatial and temporal resolution. Technical progress in satellite-to-satellite tracking and in gravity gradiometry will allow more detailed results in the future. In this special issue, Earth scientists develop visions of future applications based on follow-on high-precision satellite gravimetry missions.

The Symposium on Vertical Reference Systems (VeReS) was initiated on the occasion of the XXII General Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG), Birmingham 1999, by Professor Dr. Wolfgang Torge, Past President of the International Association of Geodesy (lAG) and representative of lAG to the Pan-American Institute of Geography and History (PAIGH). The idea was to organise another joint symposium of lAG and PAIGH like the previous one held during the XX IUGG General Assembly at Vienna, Austria, in 1991. Good reasons for such a joint symposium were the great success and the ongoing activities of the Project on the South American Geocentric Reference System (Sistema de Referencia Geocentrico para America del Sur, SIRGAS) being sponsored by lAG and PAIGH since 1993. The SIR GAS Project (Working Group I) had presented a continental South American reference frame of 58 stations during the lAG Scientific Assembly at Rio de Janeiro, in 1997. This reference frame was already adopted by several South American countries as the basis for their new national horizontal geodetic datums (SIRGAS Working Group II). To overcome the problems of the heterogeneous vertical (height) datums between the individual countries, SIRGAS had installed its Working Group III "Vertical Datum" in 1997. As the discussion on the unification of vertical reference systems is also going on in lAG and other bodies of science and practice, it was decided to dedicate the symposium to this topic.

These proceedings contain 23 papers, which are the peer-reviewed versions of presentations made at the Joint Scientific Assembly of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) and the International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth’s Interior (IASPEI). The assembly was held from 30 July to 4 August 2017 in Kobe, Japan. The scientific assembly included seven symposia organized by IAG, and nine joint symposia, along with additional symposia organized by IASPEI. The IAG symposia were structured according to the four IAG Commissions and the three GGOS Focus Areas, and included reference frames, static and time-variable gravity field, Earth rotation and geodynamics, multi-signal positioning, geodetic remote sensing, and GGOS. The joint symposia included monitoring of the cryosphere, studies of earthquakes, earthquake source processes, and other types of fault slip, geohazard warning systems, deformation of the lithosphere, and seafloor geodesy. Together, the IAG and joint symposia spanned a broad range of work in geodesy and its applications.
