Digitalisering, corona en vergrijzing eisen hun tol, met name bij de podiumkunsten. Het publiek ziet intussen door de bomen het bos niet meer en weet zich geen raad met het enorme aanbod. In de kunstwereld zelf steekt men liefst de kop in het zand en blijft een publiek debat uit. Het cultuurbeleid is steeds meer een technocratisch systeem geworden. Als de cijfertjes maar kloppen en de subsidieaanvragen en ellenlange jaarverslagen maar op tijd worden ingediend. Melle Daamen analyseert op scherpe en tegendraadse wijze het Nederlandse kunstbeleid van de laatste dertig jaar. Melle Daamen (Heumen, 1959) was op zijn negentiende al bestuurssecretaris van de VPRO. Hij was de eerste directeur van de toen net opgerichte Mondriaan Stichting, en later directeur van de Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam en Theater Rotterdam en kroonlid van de Raad voor Cultuur. Tegenwoordig is hij consultant en entrepreneur in de culturele sector.
