An overview of the mysterious history of the Freemasons and their presence in American society With over four million members worldwide, and two million in the U.S., Freemasonry is the largest fraternal organization in the world. Published in conjunction with the National Heritage Museum, this extravagantly illustrated volume offers an overview of Freemasonry’s origins in seventeenth-century Scotland and England before exploring its evolving role in American history, from the Revolution through the labor and civil rights movements, and into the twenty-first century. American Freemasons explores some of the causes for the rise and fall of membership in the fraternity and why it has attracted men in such large numbers for centuries. American Freemasons is the perfect introduction to understanding a society that, while shrouded in mystery, has played an integral role in the lives and communities of millions of Americans. Copublished with the National Heritage Museum.

This powerful study weaves the story of Freemasonry into the narrative of American religious history. Freighted with the mythical legacies of stonemasons’ guilds and the Newtonian revolution, English Freemasonry arrived in colonial America with a vast array of cultural baggage, which was drawn on, added to, and transformed during its sojourn through American culture. David G. Hackett argues that from the 1730s through the early twentieth century the religious worlds of an evolving American social order broadly appropriated the beliefs and initiatory practices of this all-male society. For much of American history, Freemasonry was both counter and complement to Protestant churches, as well as a forum for collective action among racial and ethnic groups outside the European American Protestant mainstream. Moreover, the cultural template of Freemasonry gave shape and content to the American "public sphere." By including a group not usually seen as a carrier of religious beliefs and rituals, Hackett expands and complicates the terrain of American religious history by showing how Freemasonry has contributed to a broader understanding of the multiple influences that have shaped religion in American culture.

This biography analyzes Astor's rise from poor German immigrant in 1784 to the first modern millionaire--he was one before the term "millionaire" entered the English language. Many consider him to be the fourth wealthiest American of all times. After his death in 1848, the public began to discuss the "responsibility" of a millionaire. Some argued that he must have been greedy and cold. Some voices demanded that he should have given all his money back to the United States. More liberal thinkers praised him for his genius and vision. This biography presents a balanced picture. Astor was the founder of the first American settlement on the Pacific (Astoria, Oregon) and of New York's fine hotels the Astor House and the Waldorf-Astoria, as well as a developer of the American West and a fur trader. Many American cities and sites are named after him. He donated the Astor Library to the city of New York (it became the first public library of the city), now part of the New York Public Library.

Excerpt from The Mystic Circle, and American Hand-Book of Masonry: Containing a Brief History of Free Masonry in Europe and America; Symbolic Chart; Ancient Constitutions of the Grand Lodge of England; Ahiman Rezon; Constitutional Rules IN presenting this Second Edition of the Mystic Circle to the Fraternity, the Compiler begs to be understood as laying no claim to the originality of the most valuable portion of the matter contained in it, but offers it as a compilation of that practical, valuable information, which it is important that every member of the Order should possess, more especially those who expect, or wish to participate in the labors of the Craft. The work was compiled at the urgent solicitation of many intelligent and experienced Masons, who had long felt the want of such a publication. The ready sale which the first edition has met with, and the present demand for the work, have induced the publication of a second edition, in preparing which, the matter has been revised and re-arranged into a more systematic form; and while some unimportant portions have been stricken out, other valuable matter has been added. More interest is given to it by the addition of a collection of Odes, Hymns, Anthems and Songs, appropriately arranged for the various ceremonies additional information, of a gene ral character, as well as relating to Masonic jurisprudence, is also embraced. The manual, is that which has been approved, adopted and used by the various Grand Lodges for many years. Great pains have been taken to render this edition as full, perfect and complete, for all practical purposes, as any could at this time be made. Ample means being in the hands of the Compiler, he trusts that it will stand the test of a critical examination, which is solicited, as from it, the best evidence of its utility could be obtained.
