Outside Britain itself, the richest holdings of British art are found in American collections. This extraordinary presentation of some 85 works pays tribute to this strength of American collecting, while offering a fresh and engaging account of the history of painting in Britain from the sixteenth century to the present. The selection is drawn from collections from around the United States, both public and private, and includes spectacular pictures from the Yale Center for British Art and the Huntington Art Collections in California, the two leading collections of British art in America. Among the highlights are such masterpieces as Sir Anthony Van Dyck's portrait of Queen Henrietta Maria with her dwarf, Sir Jeffrey Hudson, William Hogarth's Beggar's Opera, Thomas Gainsborough's Blue Boy, Henry Fuseli's Nightmare, John Constable's Hadleigh Castle, J. M. W. Turner's Staffa, Fingal's Cave, and William Holman Hunt's Lady of Shalott. Following introductory essays by Malcolm Warner on anglophilia and art, and by Robyn Asleson on the history of collecting British art in the States, each painting is reproduced in colour, with a discussion of its artistic importance and the circumstances o

British masterpieces of grand-style portraiture and landscape painting are explored in this volume. Portraits such as Thomas Gainsborough's Mrs. Richard Brinsley Sheridan, as well as pictures by George Romney and Sir Henry Raeburn, attest to the influence of Sir Anthony van Dyck's more sophisticated European style on artists of the period. John Constable's Wivenhoe Park, Essex and Joseph Mallord William Turner's Keelmen Heaving in Coals by Moonlight are some of the best examples of British art of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

This volume explores the crucial role of art dealers in creating a transatlantic art market in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. “There was money in the air, ever so much money,” wrote Henry James in 1907, reflecting on the American appetite for art acquisitions. Indeed, collectors such as Henry Clay Frick and Andrew W. Mellon are credited with bringing noteworthy European art to the United States, with their collections forming the backbone of major American museums today. But what of the dealers, who possessed the expertise in art and recognized the potential of developing a new market model on both sides of the Atlantic? Money in the Air investigates the often-overlooked role of these dealers in creating an international art world. Contributors examine the histories of wellknown international firms like Duveen Brothers, M. Knoedler & Co., and Goupil & Cie and their relationships with American clients, as well as accounts of other remarkable dealers active in the transatlantic art market. Drawing on dealer archives, scholars reveal compelling findings, including previously unknown partnerships and systems of cooperation. This volume offers new perspectives on the development of art collections that formed the core of American art museums, such as the National Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Frick Collection.

The Manchester Art Treasures Exhibition Of 1857 written by ElizabethA. Pergam and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-05 with Art categories.

An overdue study of a groundbreaking event, this is the first book-length examination of the Manchester Art Treasures Exhibition of 1857. Intended to rehabilitate Manchester's image at a heady time of economic prosperity, the Exhibition became a touchstone for aesthetic, social, and economic issues of the mid-nineteenth century. Reverberations of this moment can be followed to the present day in the discipline of art history and its practice in public museums of Europe and America. Highlighting the tension between art and commerce, philanthropy and profit, the book examines the Exhibition's organization and the presentation of the works of art in the purpose-built Art Treasures Palace. Pergam places the Exhibition in the context of contemporary debates about museum architecture and display. With an analysis of the reception of both "Ancient" and "Modern" paintings, the book questions the function of exhibitions in the construction of an art historical canon. The book also provides an essential reference tool: a compiled list of all of the paintings exhibited in 1857 that are now in public collections throughout the world, with an analysis of the collecting trends manifest in their provenance.

Writing The Pre Raphaelites written by Tim Barringer and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-05 with Art categories.

This vibrant collection of essays claims that a complex network of texts by critics, biographers and diarists established the credibility and influence of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. Throughout the twentieth century, Modernist taste failed to acknowledge the achievement of oppositional groupings such as the Pre-Raphaelites. The essays collected here, however, reveal that the British group anticipated later avant-gardes by using the written word to configure for itself a radical artistic identity. Public and critics alike were scandalized by the radicalism of Pre-Raphaelite painting, its unflinching portrayal of historical figures and of contemporary life, and its irreverent attitude to artistic convention. Pre-Raphaelitism's innovations were not confined to style: new forms of artistic identity and behaviour were explored. As the contributors interrogate the texts through which Pre-Raphaelitism was constructed, they demonstrate that the movement's wide influence as a cultural phenomenon derived from the interplay between exhibited works and critical discourse. Applying a range of sophisticated methodologies from the fields of literary studies, art history, and cultural studies, these interdisciplinary essays uncover the neglected role of texts in the success of the Pre-Raphaelite rebellion and argue in favor of a new centrality for this movement in the history of nineteenth-century European culture.

This book is a wide-ranging exploration of the production of Victorian art autograph replicas, a painting’s subsequent versions created by the same artist who painted the first version. Autograph replicas were considered originals, not copies, and were highly valued by collectors in Britain, America, Japan, Australia, and South Africa. Motivated by complex combinations of aesthetic and commercial interests, replicas generated a global, and especially transatlantic, market between the 1870s and the 1940s, and almost all collected replicas were eventually donated to US public museums, giving replicas authority in matters of public taste and museums’ modern cultural roles. This book will be of interest to scholars in art history, museum studies, and economic history.

British Paintings Of The Sixteenth Through Nineteenth Centuries written by National Gallery of Art (U.S.) and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992 with Painting categories.

This volume is devoted to the paintings in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., that were produced by British artists, or by foreign artists who spent the greater part of their working lives in Britain, from the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries. Composed mainly of paintings acquired by such prominent nineteenth-century industrialists as Andrew Mellon and P.A.B. Widener, the core of this important collection is a series of portraits by such masters as Gainsborough, Lawrence, Raeburn, and Romney, who represent the "golden age" of British painting. Brilliant landscapes by Constable, Turner, and Wilson, among others, attest to another genre in which British artists have long excelled. Arranged alphabetically by artist, full catalogue entries articulate the history, style, content, and context of each work, with technical notes offering insight into the artists' working methods. The volume also contains introductory biographies of each artist, as well as an up-to-date bibliography for each painting.
