Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a Danish author, poet and artist. Celebrated for children’s literature, his most cherished fairy tales include "The Emperor's New Clothes", "The Little Mermaid", "The Nightingale", "The Steadfast Tin Soldier", "The Snow Queen", "The Ugly Duckling" and "The Little Match Girl". His books have been translated into every living language, and today there is no child or adult that has not met Andersen's whimsical characters. His fairy tales have been adapted to stage and screen countless times, most notably by Disney with the animated films "The Little Mermaid" in 1989 and "Frozen", which is loosely based on "The Snow Queen", in 2013. Thanks to Andersen's contribution to children's literature, his birth date, April 2, is celebrated as International Children's Book Day.

Pam's mother, Bernie Marsh, told her stories about her father Sheridan Howard growing up in Mendon, Michigan and she shared these stories with Emily. Emily is going into fi fth grade at Parke Lane Elementary on Grosse Ile. She's an active sports-minded young lady, takes piano lessons, and loves to read. Her father Jay and mother Lisa both grew up on the Island where they live with their three daughters Emily,10, Libby,8, and Katie,5. Grandma Pam is a retired teacher who taught English, French, drama, and journalism in high school and physical education in grades fi rst through twelfth. She is also active in her community and was co-founder and editor of The Ile Camera, the community newspaper, at age 13.

How many times can a person have the opportunity to publish a great grandfather's thoughts? I am just that person but came across this opportunity by both chance and Divine Intervention. While my Great Grandfather would be 130 years today, his thoughts continue to inspire me. His simple way of explaining life's complexities, with his common man's approach, is heartwarming. I can't wait to share with you a man that has reminded me that family matters, friends are forever, love is pure and God exists regardless of which century you were born or will be born.
