Alacrity Press is proud to republish Charles F. Horne's series, Great Men and Famous Women. First published in 1894, Horne's profiles of over 200 men and women, who shaped the course of history, have inspired generations of readers, including a young and future president - Harry S. Truman. As relevant today, as when first published, the deeds and accomplishments of history's great men and women will challenge and encourage readers to leave their own mark on history. The original series was made up of four books; each printed in two parts for a total of eight volumes. This new version organizes each of the two-part books into single volumes, with a total of four volumes. Workmen and Heros, the third volume of the four-volume set, includes profiles of: Robert Bruce, King Richard, Zenobia, Leif Ericson, Hans Gutenberg, Christopher Columbus, Cyrus Field, Nathan Hale, David Livingstone, Marie Antoinette, Florence Nightingale, Queen Victoria and Thomas Edison.

Excerpt from Great Men and Famous Women, Vol. 1: A Series of Pen and Pencil Sketches of the Lives of More Than 200 of the Most Prominent Personages in History When Nebuchadnezzar rested after his conquests, secure in the subjugation of his rivals, and in the possession of his vast kingdom, he gave himself up to the material improvement of Babylon and the surrounding country. The city as he left it, at the end Of his reign of forty-three years, was built on both sides Of the Euphrates, and covered a space of four hundred square miles, equal to five times the size of London. It was surrounded by a triple wall Of bri'ck the innermost, over three hundred feet high, and eighty-five feet broad at the top, with room for four chariots to drive abreast. The walls were pierced by one hundred gate-ways framed in brass and with brazen gates, and at the points Where the Euphrates entered and left the city the walls also turned and followed the course of the river, thus dividing the city into two fortified parts. These two districts were connected by a bridge Of stone piers, guarded by portcullises, and ferries also plied between the quays that lined the river-banks, to which access was given by gates in the walls. Excerpt from Great Men and Famous Women, Vol. 2: A Series of Pen and Pencil Sketches of the Lives of More Than 200 of the Most Prominent Personages in History The value of his services was soon made evident. Twice, at the head of very inferior troops, he checked Conde in the career of Victory; and again compelled him to fight under the walls of Paris; where, in the celebrated battle of the Fau bourg St. Antoine, the prince and his army narrowly escaped destruction. Pi nally, he re-established the Court at Paris, and compelled Conde to quit the realm. These important events took place in one campaign of six months in 1652. Excerpt from Great Men and Famous Women, Vol. 4: A Series of Pen and Pencil Sketches of the Lives of More Than 200 of the Most Prominent Personages in History; Artists and Authors The plot of the Odyssey is admitted to be consecutive and regular in structure. There are certain differences in the mythology which have been made a ground for supposing a separate authorship. But, in the first place, this would do nothing to explain them; in the second, they find their natural ex planation in observing that the scene of the wanderings is laid in other lands, be yond the circle of Achaian knowledge and tradition, and that Homer modifies his scheme to meet the ethnical variations as he gathered them from the trading navigators of Phoenicia, who alone could have supplied him with the information required for his purpose.
