This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1911 edition. Excerpt: ... II WHAT TO SAY The student of public speaking will do well to confine his first efforts to simple forms of speech-making. Plain narrative and clear statement of fact should be his primary objects. The ornamental graces of rhetoric and oratory may advantageously be left for subsequent consideration. His subject may be anything from a personal experience, such as a visit to New York or London, to a discussion of some social or political question of the day. But whatever theme he choose to speak upon, it is important that it be timely and of probable interest to his hearers. The highest oratorical talents will not atone for an inappropriate choice of subject. There are hundreds of vital topics, in which most men are more or less interested. A selection may be made from these: Before attempting to write speeches of his own, the student will find it profitable to examine those of others, a good selection of which is provided in this volume. Cicero says: Since all the business and art of an orator is divided into five parts, he ought first to find out what he should say; next, to arrange and dispose his matter, not only in a certain order, but with a sort of power and judgment; then to clothe and deck his thoughts with language; then to secure them in his memory; and lastly, to deliver them with dignity and grace. I had learned and understood also that before we enter upon the main subject, the minds of the audience should be conciliated by an exordium; next, that the case should be clearly stated; then, that the point in controversy should be established; then, that what we may maintain should be supported by proof, and that whatever was said on the other side should be refuted; and that, in the conclusion of our speech, whatever was in our...

“In a dark and dusty barn, a wise leader sits ensconced on a bed of straw, partially illuminated by a lantern. He is nearing the end of his life but, even in old age, retains a look of majesty. The barn is a sea of expectant faces. Everyone has gathered to hear what this respected elder has to say. Although they don't yet know it, this is to be his last public appearance and the words he's about to utter will not only inspire a generation, they will incite a revolution... This leader is no ordinary man. In fact, he isn't a man at all. He's a pig. But he's not just any old hog; he's a prize-winning porker and he can talk.” Our journey into The Art of Public Speaking begins with a fascinating analysis of Old Major's speech from Animal Farm. But why de-construct a speech made by a dying pig more than half a century ago? Because, in this speech, Old Major dispenses an armoury of linguistic weaponry…a succession of rhetorical devices which continue to pepper politicians' speeches to this very day. As such, Old Major's speech is one from which all leaders can learn. As well as opening the hood on a series of great speeches to examine what makes them work, this book also explores:- Numerous mnemonics to help you remember the components of a great speech- Countless examples explaining how persuasive devices can be used in practice- Memorable frameworks to help you structure your speech for maximum impact - Tips on how to harness the power of non-verbal communications inc. body language & voice qualityThis book combines all the theory (from Aristotle to Quintilian) with practical resources to help you get started on your own inspirational speech. It's got something for everyone: it dips its toe in the art of rhetoric by explaining - in simple, colloquial terms – how the most common persuasive devices work, and swims out further into the sea of figurative language to examine its lofty origins in Ancient Greece. From anadiplosis to zeugma, and allegory to zoomorphism, this book analyses over 250 language devices perfect for every public speaker. Whether you're a beginner trying to write your first speech or an expert in search of the origins of rhetoric devices, this book has something for you.

For just such people Grenville Kleiser has written his book "Successful Methods of Public Speaking." The work deals with methods of correction for self-consciousness, with manners as a power in the making of men, with the value of a cultivated and agreeable voice, with confidence in society and business. A series of suggestions is given for an every-day cultivation of these qualities. "Embodies in a most encouraging and practical way all that is needed to make one who is naturally timid or fearful in speech and manner, self-poised, calm, dignified and confident of himself. It must be said that the method proposed is one of sober self-estimate and persistent effort along well considered lines of thought and action, designed to eradicate this uneasiness."--Times Dispatch, Richmond, Va. As you carefully study the successful methods of public speakers, as briefly set forth in this book, you will observe that there is nothing that can be substituted for personal sincerity. Unless you thoroughly believe in the message you wish to convey to others, you are not likely to impress them favorably. It was said of an eminent British orator, that when one heard him speak in public, one instinctively felt that there was something finer in the man than in anything he said. Therein lies the key to successful oratory. When the truth of your message is deeply engraved on your own mind; when your own heart has been touched as by a living flame; when your own character and personality testify to the innate sincerity and nobility of your life, then your speech will be truly eloquent, and men will respond to your fervent appeal. Let's face it, creating a speech is hard work. However, as long as we are going to go to the effort of creating a speech, it sure seems like we should do a good job of it. Now the difficult part comes: just exactly how does one go about creating a speech that works? What You'll Find Inside: SIZE MATTERS - SHAPING YOUR SPEECH TO MATCH YOUR AUDIENCE THE SECRET TO BECOMING AN EXPERT IN ANYTHING GET IT DONE: THINKING ON YOUR FEET AND BUILDING A SPEECH REAL QUICK 4 THINGS THAT YOU SHOULD NEVER TALK ABOUT We need to keep in mind the fact that we are never creating a generic speech. Instead, we're creating a specific speech for a specific audience. What this means is that we need to customize our speech to our audience. Our ultimate goal is to be able to create a speech that is so good that we are able to cast a spell over our audience. We want our audience to listen to what we have to say. This means that we need to find ways to get them to view us as being the experts on what we are talking about. If we want them to remember what we've told them, then we need to find ways to make them laugh during our speech. This is no easy thing to accomplish. In our hopes of getting our audience to listen to us, we all struggle with the same sets of questions. Will they believe us? This comes down to the age old question of if an audience will believe what you are telling them because of who you are or because of how you tell them. If you have not had time to prepare a formal speech, then you had better be good at thinking on your feet! The only tool that we have to work with when we are giving a speech is words. What words we use and how we put them together can allow us to create powerful speeches that can change how people think. When we are creating these speeches we need to keep in mind the fact that the best speeches often have a great deal of us in them.
