This carefully researched and definitive book recreates the magic of the greatest violinists in history. In three centuries, the solo performer progressed from downtrodden private servant to revered public idol. The supreme artists Corelli, Vivaldi, Viotti, Paganini, Vieuxtemps, Joachim and Auer were pivotal figures in the history of violin playing, while more recent times have seen Sarasate, Ysaye and the virtuosi of the modern recording era. The Great Violinists reveals a range of personalities from the conventional to the eccentric. In her coverage of the last hundred years, Margaret Campbell has interviewed many eminent musicians and had rich access to letters and private documents. Her book offers a vivid portrait of skills and traditions that have been handed down through generations. It is a book for string players, students, concert goers and music buffs - indeed, anyone who enjoys the sound of the violin.

Theory And Practice In Late Nineteenth Century Violin Performance written by David Milsom and has been published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Music categories.

In this book, David Milsom argues that in order to convey late nineteenth-century musical style appropriately, the performer needs to have a grasp of the philosophical orientation of musical thinking at that time. In effect, one must 'unlearn' the value systems of the present, in order to assimilate those of the late nineteenth century. To arrive at a better understanding of performance in this period, the book examines performing style in the German and Franco-Belgian schools of violin playing from c.1850 - c.1900. Milsom explores selected instrumental treatises written by noted players and theorists, together with a number of recorded performances given by celebrated artists in the early years of the twentieth century, to review the similarities and differences between theory and practice. An accompanying CD illustrates this relationship.

The Performance Style Of Jascha Heifetz written by Dario Sarlo and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-03 with Music categories.

The violinist Jascha Heifetz (1901-1987) is considered among the most influential performers in history and still maintains a strong following among violinists around the world. Dario Sarlo contributes significantly to the growing field of analytical research into recordings and the history of performance style. Focussing on Heifetz and his under-acknowledged but extensive performing relationship with the Bach solo violin works (BWV 1001-1006), Sarlo examines one of the most successful performing musicians of the twentieth century along with some of the most frequently performed works of the violin literature. The book proposes a comprehensive method for analysing and interpreting the legacies of prominent historical performers in the wider context of their particular performance traditions. The study outlines this research framework and addresses how it can be transferred to related studies of other performers. By building up a comprehensive understanding of multiple individual performance styles, it will become possible to gain deeper insight into how performance style develops over time. The investigation is based upon eighteen months of archival research in the Library of Congress’s extensive Jascha Heifetz Collection. It draws on numerous methods to examine what and how Heifetz played, why he played that way, and how that way of playing compares to other performers. The book offers much insight into the ’music industry’ between 1915 and 1975, including touring, programming, audiences, popular and professional reception and recording. The study concludes with a discussion of Heifetz’s unique performer profile in the context of violin performance history.
