Excerpt from A New History of Great Britain: From the Roman Conquest to the Outbreak of the Great War Green, like every one else who tries to compress the story of England into one volume, had to take a selective view; for instance, he emphasized, in some centuries, literary history, in others, social. There are many gaps in his narrative, 'due to the imperative need of compres sion; and to these gaps we owe his singularly full treat ment of other parts of our history. The Short History was not a complete statement it was not meant to be such; but it is the account of what struck a man who possessed both knowledge and genius, as being the most important aspects of English History. Excerpt from Great Britain and the Holy See, 1792-1806: A Chapter in the History of Diplomatic Relations Between England and Rome Parliament opened at Westminster on January 22, 1794 and Mgr Erskine returned from Scotland to be presented at Court by his relative Lord Kellie. He was also taken by him to' a place near the throne in the House of Lords, to hear the King's speech on the opening of Parliament. Erskine informed the Cardinal Secretary of this in a letter, written from London on 1 7 February 1 794, which conveyed the news that the English Government intend to erect and endow a seminary for Irish Catholic priests, at a cost of pounds sterling annually. Excerpt from The Romanization of Roman Britain The following pages are based on a paper which I read to the British Academy in 1905 and which, according to the custom of the Academy, was issued both in its general Proceedings (ii. 185 - 217) and separately. In its separate form it soon ran out of print, and in 1912 the Delegates of the Clarendon Press published a new edition, revised and enlarged to about twice its original size. This second edition is now in turn exhausted; in issuing a third, I have revised and in places recast the text, and I have again increased considerably both text and illustrations. I have tried to preserve the character of the work as a treatise on a definite subject which seems to possess quite real interest and importance; I have also endeavoured so to word my matter that the text, though not the footnotes, can be read easily by any one who is interested in the subject, without special knowledge of Latin. Excerpt from Coins of the Romans: Relating to Britain, Described and Illustrated The object of this little work, is to bring under one view the coins of the Romans which relate to the province of Britain. It is hoped that such an attempt mil not only find favour with the antiquary and the numismatist, but will also interest all who are curious in the early history of our island; some of the principal events in which, during a long period of the Roman occupation, are recorded on the coins of the conquerors. Excerpt from Stories From History Julius Caesar, the great Roman dictator, or, as he is by some called, the first emperor of Rome, invaded and conquered Britain, and in a great measure brought it under the yoke of Rome. This Julius Caesar, who wrote the history of his own wars and conquests, is the first real historian who has made mention of the Britons. He calls them barbarians, - and so, in comparison with the Romans, at that time the most civilized people in the world, they certainly were, - yet, from many circumstances which he himself mentions, it is certain that they were acquainted with the art of working mines, the use of metals, and the con struction of many curious and useful articles.
