Excerpt from Greece, From the Coming of the Hellenes to A D. 14 The "Stories of the Nations" could not be complete without that of Greece. This is one excuse for adding to the number of short Greek Histories. Another is that it was a necessary preface to a second volume designed to sketch the fortunes of Greece after its period of greatness, the interest of which could hardly be intelligible without some account of the life and genius of its people when at their best. I have tried throughout to lay stress upon the political, intellectual, and artistic achievements of the Greeks, rather than on the history of military operations. The latter of course could not be ignored or neglected, but they have not been made the chief feature in the book. My plan was to notice the literary movement in each period as it arose; it was thought better however that a chapter containing a more continuous account of extant Greek literature should be added. It therefore necessarily contains some repetition of what had been said in previous chapters. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from New Chapters in Greek History: Historical Results of Recent Excavations in Greece and Asia Minor These Chapters were usually written as a relief in the intervals of lecturing, cataloguing and other more absorb ing employments. They are not, I need scarcely say, in tended to be exhaustive. Within limits so narrow nothing more could be attempted than to give a rough outline. I have written not for archaeologists, but for the ordinary educated reader, for those who are acquainted with the literature or the history or the art of Greece, and who wish to fill up lacunae, or to learn in what directions the spade is increasing our acquaintance with ancient Hellas. Certain inconsistencies, as the use sometimes of I and sometimes of the more formal we, or differences in style and scale, result from the variety of the occasions on which various parts of the work were written. Also in some of the papers earliest written, especially Chapter X., are passages which I should not now write: but these, unless actually incorrect, I have not usually altered. Excerpt from The Description of Greece, Vol. 3 of 3 Attic land: and the Flatasen ses are near the Eleutherenses. But the whole nation of the Boeotians derived its name from Boeotus, who they say was the son of Itonus, and the nymph Melanippe. They add, that Itonus was the son of Am phictyon. Many of their towns too are denominated from: men, but a still greater number from women. The Pla tmenses indeed were, as it appears to me, natives of Bmotia from the first; but they are of opinion that they derived their name from Plataea, the daughter of a river. It is, however, evident that the Platmenses reigned here in ancient times. For all Greece formerly was in subjection to royal authority, and there was no such thing as a democracy to be found among them. But the Plataeenses do not know any thing of their kings except Asopus, and Cithaeron who was prior to asopus: and they say that one of these gave a name to a mountain, and the other to a river. Excerpt from India in Greece, or Truth in Mythology: Containing the Sources of the Hellenic Race, the Colonisation of Egypt and Palestine, the Wars of the Grand Lama, and the Bud'histic Propaganda in Greece I would here repeat a remark made on another occasion2 on the historical basis of mythology. Perhaps within the whole compass of mythology there is no system altogether more plausible than the Grecian. Its coherence betrays art in arrangement, but weakness in the mam incidents. A basis, however, it undoubtedly possessed, which was neither of an inventive nor fictitious character. What that basis was, is certainly not to be eliminated from either poet or logographer, or historian, independent of extraneous aids. Such aids are presented to the inquiring mind in those two most durable records of a nation, - its language and its monuments. These adjuncts, though of foreign origin, are.
