The term 'colonisation' encompasses much diversity, from the settlement of the western Mediterranean and the Black sea by Greeks in the archaic period to the foundation of Roman colonies in mainland Italy during the Republic. Though very different in their motives and methods, both Greek and Roman colonisations are presented by our sources as organised and clearly defined processes, within which internal and external relations were firmly delineated. This volume contains six new studies, two Greek and four Roman. Contributors employ historiographical, comparative and post-colonial approaches to question ancient constructs. The book contains detailed case-studies as well as synoptic treatments. Contributors build on recent research in Greek and Roman history to show how ideologies of colonisation develop and come to dominate the historical record.

In recent years the archaeological understanding of both Greek and Roman 'colonisations' has changed radically. One important element of that change has been the understanding that traditional loose analogy with Modern European Imperialism has been unproductive. However, while many scholars have pointed to the negative impact of such comparisons, there has as yet been no real attempt to understand the pervasiveness of the analogy. Nor has there been any attempt to assess the viability of analogy in general as a tool for understanding these ancient 'colonisations'. In this book leading scholars in the field open the debate on this important issue. They expose the implicit comparisons that underlie some current interpretations and suggest ways in which modern analogies, rigorously constructed, can help to elucidate the processes of settlement and cultural interaction in the past.

The articles feature discussions of individual problems in politics, epigraphy, historiography, numismatics, and archaeology, including topics such as the Battle of Actium, the Senatus Consultum de Bacchanalibus, the Spartan constitution, democracy in Camarina, Persian coinage, mercenary soldiers, the origins of both Greek and Roman historical writing, cult practice at Berezan, the Athenian Long Walls, the Peloponnesian War, and various aspects of Greek colonization and Roman provincial policy.

Greek Colonization in Local Context takes a fresh look at Greek colonies around Europe and the Black Sea. The emphasis is on cultural interaction, transformation and the repercussions and local reactions to colonization in social, religious and cultural terms. Papers examine the archaeological evidence for cultural interaction in a series of case studies from locations around the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions, at a variety of scales. Contributors consider the effects of colonization on urban life and developments in cities and smaller settlements as well as in the rural landscapes surrounding and supporting them. This collection of new papers by leading scholars reveals fascinating details of the native response to the imposition of Greek rule and the indigenous input into early state development in the Mediterranean and adjacent regions.

Ancient Greek France written by A. Trevor Hodge and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with History categories.

As far back as 600 B.C., long before the Romans, cities such as Marseilles, Antibes, Nice, and Monte Carlo were founded by settlers who emigrated from mainland Greece and the older Greek colonies of the Ionian coast in Asia Minor. Tracing the history of Provence and the French Riviera back to its earliest roots, Trevor Hodge gathers together the evidence for this far-flung outpost of ancient Greek civilization. Starting with a survey of Phocaea, the Ionian metropolis, Ancient Greek France follows the settlers' fleet overseas to Provence and the foundation there of Massalia-modern Marseilles. Subsequent chapters outline Massalia's topography, archaeology, history, economy, politics, and culture. The book provides site-by-site commentary on the other, later Greek colonies along the Mediterranean coast between Ampurias, in Spain, and Monaco, and a study of the Celts of inland Gaul and their relations, both commercial and cultural, with the Greek colonists. Hodge assesses the characteristics and achievements of Massalia, and considers the place it held in the Greek imagination. A readable, original contribution, this book will appeal to scholars and students of ancient history, archaeologists, general readers, and travelers interested in the south of France.
