This is the story of the first werewolf, which began as a Greek myth. Infamously, King Lycaon of Arcadia was visited by Zeus, who cursed the king and turned him into a wolf. Conspicuously, there is no mention of the moon in that original myth. This book unveils the moon's place in a more complete version of the story.

In a moonlit graveyard somewhere in southern Italy, a soldier removes his clothes in readiness to transform himself into a wolf. He depends upon the clothes to recover his human shape, and so he magically turns them to stone, but his secret is revealed when, back in human form, he is seen to carry a wound identical to that recently dealt to a marauding wolf. In Arcadia a man named Damarchus accidentally tastes the flesh of a human sacrifice and is transformed into a wolf for nine years. At Temesa Polites is stoned to death for raping a local girl, only to return to terrorize the people of the city in the form of a demon in a wolfskin. Tales of the werewolf are by now well established as a rich sub-strand of the popular horror genre; less widely known is just how far back in time their provenance lies. These are just some of the werewolf tales that survive from the Graeco-Roman world, and this is the first book in any language to be devoted to their study. It shows how in antiquity werewolves thrived in a story-world shared by witches, ghosts, demons, and soul-flyers, and argues for the primary role of story-telling-as opposed to rites of passage-in the ancient world's general conceptualization of the werewolf. It also seeks to demonstrate how the comparison of equally intriguing medieval tales can be used to fill in gaps in our knowledge of werewolf stories in the ancient world, thereby shedding new light on the origins of the modern phenomenon. All ancient texts bearing upon the subject have been integrated into the discussion in new English translations, so that the book provides not only an accessible overview for a broad readership of all levels of familiarity with ancient languages, but also a comprehensive sourcebook for the ancient werewolf for the purposes of research and study.

Excerpt: A werewolf, also known as a lycanthrope (from the Greek:, lukos, "wolf," and, anthr pos, man), is a mythological or folkloric human with the ability to shapeshift into a wolf or an anthropomorphic wolf-like creature, either purposely, by being bitten by another werewolf, or after being placed under a curse. This transformation is often associated with the appearance of the full moon, as popularly noted by the medieval chronicler Gervase of Tilbury, and perhaps in earlier times among the ancient Greeks through the writings of Petronius. Werewolves are often attributed superhuman strength and senses, far beyond those of both wolves and men. The werewolf is generally held as a European character, although its lore spread through the world in later times. Shape-shifters, similar to werewolves, are common in tales from all over the world, most notably amongst the Native Americans, though most of them involve animal forms other than wolves. Werewolves are a frequent subject of modern fictional books, although fictional werewolves have been attributed traits distinct from those of original folklore, most notably vulnerability to silver bullets. Werewolves continue to endure in modern culture...

A reference book for the 19th-century werewolf seeker, Sabine Baring-Gould’s ‘The Book of Were-Wolves’ explores the trying tales and magic myths of werewolves from ancient folklore, Greek and Norse myths. Unpacking the truth behind legendary beliefs, cases of Lycanthropy, and tips and tricks for curing yourself of a werewolf conviction, Baring-Gould deep dives into the dark psychological reasons as to how and why people may believe themselves to be part wolf. Asking the age-old question of how anyone can feel capable of maiming and killing another being, ‘The Book of Were-Wolves’ invites readers to ponder how and why some members of society may harbour secret desires to inflict cruelty on other animals - big and small. Weaving an intoxicating narrative, ‘The Book of Were-Wolves’ is ideal for fans of Netflix’s ‘Werewolves Within’. Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924) was a British novelist and Anglican priest. A prolific writer, his bibliography spans more than one thousand publications, including the best-known hymns ‘Onward, Christian Soldiers’, ‘Sing Lullaby’ and ‘Now the Day is Over’. Baring-Gould's interest in folklore led to the publication of one of the most frequently cited studies of lycanthropy, ‘The Book of Were-Wolves’.

...A fascinating and exhaustive historical survey and critical analysis of the legend of the were-wolf, including actual trials and events from history. Author Sabine Baring-Gould created a foundation work of modern supernatural lore when he published his definitive Book of Were-wolves in 1865. The book is a fascinating survey of were-wolf lore from the Greek and Roman era to the mid-nineteenth century. Baring-Gould cites hundreds of sources as he builds his case for the "reality" of were-wolverie. His approach to the subject is analytical and modern. His conclusions are extraordinary. Thirty years before Jack the Ripper, he concluded that were-wolves are what the modern era would come to know as serial killers or sexual psychopaths. Using the best psychological, sociological, historical, anthropological, mythological and medical theories and ideas of his day, he uncannily identified several key characteristics of these killers. And his conclusions have withstood the test of time. Baring-Gould takes the the reader on an intriguing journey through a poorly understood and dark side of legend, history and human nature.
