Description Experience life on a small Yorkshire farm as Britain recovers from the Second World War in this semi-biographical rural mystery. Moving from town to country is more than a change of scenery for Mary, wife to hard working Tom and mother to three small children. As she struggles with her ever-increasing family, stark living conditions, poverty and loneliness, Mary is drawn to the company of the handsome and convivial Jack Netherfield. The neighbouring farmer flatters Mary and spoils her children, causing friction with the often absent Tom. As events plough even darker furrows, family secrets are overturned and relationships are changed forever. About the Author Edna Hunneysett was born in 1940 and spent her childhood on a remote farm on the Yorkshire moors. After passing her eleven-plus exam, she attended a convent boarding grammar school for six years. On leaving school, Edna was employed by the Inland Revenue. Mike Jeffers is a young cowboy trying to make a living off a tumbledown, rock-strewn piece of land he bought because he liked the views. An orphan, Mike grew up as a ward of the state. Living with different families he has learned what hard work is and isn't afraid of it. What does scare him is losing some of his steers or heifers to the cattle rustlers who are working the area. One evening on his way to visit another rancher who has lost some steers, his horse is spooked by stepping on a dead body lying in the path and Mike is caught up in a murder mystery he must solve before he loses some of his own cattle. But while Mike and the Sheriff team up to find the killer some complications arise involving a little boy lost in the wilderness across the road from Mike's ranch and an old abandoned mine there Meantime, Mike marries and settles down to a happy and prosperous life. He buys more land and hires cowboys, but despite how rosy the future looks, suspicion keeps on growing inside Mike that something weird is going on in the old mine. When he investigates, he learns that old ghosts cast long shadows, a lesson that nearly costs him his life.

The debates over the Jewish theme in Russian literature have been long dominated by the old dichotomy between anti and philo-Semitic discourses. Rather than analyzing “the image of the Jew” in terms of negative or positive characteristics, and branding the authors respectively, as anti- or philo-Semitic, the author explores the complexity and the ambiguity of the construction of Jewishness as the “Other” in the works of three of Russia’s greatest nineteenth-century authors. Katz identifies Gogol, Dostoevsky and Turgenev as creators of special modes of the emerging Jewish discourse in Russian literature. She tackles the traditionally read tropes of Jews in light of both sociohistoric and cultural contexts of the time and the writers’ own politics and aesthetics.

One of the major historians of prerevolutionary Russia has collected in this volume some of his most important essays. Written over a number of years, these pioneering works have been revised and updated and are complemented by others being published for the first time. Thematically, they cover major subjects in Imperial Russian history and in historical writing, such as ideas and their role in historical change; the intelligentsia, the nobility, and peasant society; and historiography. The twelve essays raise cardinal questions about current scholarship on Russian history before the upheavals of 1917 and offer original interpretations that are of interest to the educated layman as well as the professional historian.

James Still (1906–2001) first achieved national recognition in the 1930s as a poet, and he remains one of the most beloved and important writers in Appalachian literature. Though he is best known for the seminal novel River of Earth—which Time magazine called a "work of art" and which is often compared to John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath as a poignant literary exploration of the Great Depression—Still is also recognized as a significant writer of short fiction. His stories were frequently published in outlets such as the Atlantic and the Saturday Evening Post and won numerous awards, including the O. Henry Memorial Prize. In the definitive biography of the man known as the "dean of Appalachian literature," Carol Boggess offers a detailed portrait of Still. Despite his notable output and importance as a mentor to generations of young writers, Still was extremely private, preferring a quiet existence in a century-old log house between the waters of Wolfpen Creek and Dead Mare Branch in Knott County, Kentucky. Boggess, who befriended the author in the last decade of his life, draws on correspondence, journal entries, numerous interviews with Still and his family, and extensive archival research to illuminate his somewhat mysterious personal life. James Still: A Life explores every period of Still's life, from his childhood in Alabama, through the years he spent supporting himself in various odd jobs while trying to build his literary career, to the decades he spent fostering other talents. This long-overdue biography not only offers an important perspective on the author's work and art but also celebrates the legacy of a man who succeeded in becoming a legend in his own lifetime.

Nineteenth-century landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted described his most famous project, the design of New York's Central Park, as "a democratic development of highest significance." Over the years, the significance of green in civic life has grown. In twenty-first-century America, not only open space but also other issues of sustainability—such as potable water and carbon footprints—have become crucial elements in the quality of life in the city and surrounding environment. Confronted by a U.S. population that is more than 70 percent urban, growing concern about global warming, rising energy prices, and unabated globalization, today's decision makers must find ways to bring urban life into balance with the Earth in order to sustain the natural, economic, and political environment of the modern city. In Growing Greener Cities, a collection of essays on urban sustainability and environmental issues edited by Eugenie L. Birch and Susan M. Wachter, scholars and practitioners alike promote activities that recognize and conserve nature's ability to sustain urban life. These essays demonstrate how partnerships across professional organizations, businesses, advocacy groups, governments, and individuals themselves can bring green solutions to cities from London to Seattle. Beyond park and recreational spaces, initiatives that fall under the green umbrella range from public transit and infrastructure improvement to aquifer protection and urban agriculture. Growing Greener Cities offers an overview of the urban green movement, case studies in effective policy implementation, and tools for measuring and managing success. Thoroughly illustrated with color graphs, maps, and photographs, Growing Greener Cities provides a panoramic view of urban sustainability and environmental issues for green-minded city planners, policy makers, and citizens.
