It was long ago that group analysis of differential equations became a powerful tool for studying nonlinear equations and boundary value problems. This analysis was especially fruitful in application to the basic equations of mechanics and physics because the invariance principles are already involved in their derivation. It is in no way a coincidence that the equations of hydrodynamics served as the first object for applying the new ideas and methods of group analysis which were developed by 1. V. Ovsyannikov and his school. The authors rank themselves as disciples of the school. The present monograph deals mainly with group-theoretic classification of the equations of hydrodynamics in the presence of planar and rotational symmetry and also with construction of exact solutions and their physical interpretation. It is worth noting that the concept of exact solution to a differential equation is not defined rigorously; different authors understand it in different ways. The concept of exact solution expands along with the progress of mathematics (solu tions in elementary functions, in quadratures, and in special functions; solutions in the form of convergent series with effectively computable terms; solutions whose searching reduces to integrating ordinary differential equations; etc. ). We consider it justifiable to enrich the set of exact solutions with rank one and rank two in variant and partially invariant solutions to the equations of hydrodynamics.

This book presents the induced representation method, a powerful technique in quantum mechanics with applications in condensed matter physics. After introducing the key concepts in group theory and representation theory necessary to understate the technique, the author goes on to explore applications in electron structure theory, namely: basis sets in clusters, normal vibrations, selection rules, two-electron wavefunctions, and space-group representations. This technique allows the simplification of standard techniques for the analysis of molecular orbitals and normal vibrations of molecules. Image understanding is an attempt to extract knowledge about a 3D scene from 20 images. The recent development of computers has made it possible to automate a wide range of systems and operations, not only in the industry, military, and special environments (space, sea, atomic plants, etc.), but also in daily life. As we now try to build ever more intelligent systems, the need for "visual" control has been strongly recognized, and the interest in image under standing has grown rapidly. Already, there exists a vast body of literature-ranging from general philosophical discourses to processing techniques. Compared with other works, however, this book may be unique in that its central focus is on "mathematical" principles-Lie groups and group representation theory, in particular. In the study of the relationship between the 3D scene and the 20 image, "geometry" naturally plays a central role. Today, so many branches are inter woven in geometry that we cannot truly regard it as a single subject. Neverthe less, as Felix Klein declared in his Erlangen Program, the central principle of geometry is group theory, because geometrical concepts are abstractions of properties that are "invariant" with respect to some group of transformations. In this text, we specifically focus on two groups of transformations. One is 20 rotations of the image coordinate system around the image origin. Such coordi nate rotations are indeed irrelevant when we look for intrinsic image properties.
