English Language Learners (ELLs) are a growing population in today's schools. Vocabulary acquisition is critical in an ELL's language development and is often rushed and overlooked in daily instruction. The lack of sufficient vocabulary development and instruction can lead to a student's inability to comprehend grade level text. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to identify the effectiveness of interactive read alouds in vocabulary acquisition and reading comprehension of English Language Learners. Two third grade classrooms were studied during 6 weeks of instruction. In the control group, the teacher only used the adopted curriculum during Language Arts instruction. In the treatment group, the teacher used interactive read alouds to teach the weekly vocabulary and comprehension strategies and skills. Each week both classes took the weekly selection tests, which assessed the students' comprehension of the story and the understanding of the vocabulary words. To further support the research, an outside observer came in during read aloud instruction in the treatment group to note the students' performance and progress, and students were given a survey to determine their opinion of reading aloud in the classroom. Students in the treatment growth showed more significant growth in the areas of reading comprehension and vocabulary acquisition. It is concluded that using interactive read alouds to teach vocabulary in context and model comprehension strategies greatly improves an English Language Learner's academic success.

Even though these words may add meaning to a particular story, the target words are often rare and their generalizability is limited. The Vocabulary Megaclusters provides a framework for selecting and teaching words according to their shared meaning and function in stories. Within each of the 13 Vocabulary Megaclusters, words are clustered according to conceptual connections such as emotions and traits of characters or the actions and motions in which characters engage. This article develops the rationale for the Vocabulary Megaclusters framework and illustrates how this approach provides students with a metacognitive stance that supports them in developing a rich literary vocabulary.
