This book is a four hundred year timeline of events of Marblehead, Massachusetts. There are stories based on the experiences and observations of one family continuously living in Town. William Dixey was a servant of Isaac Johnson and arrived in Naumkeag in 1629. The Dixey family settled in Marblehead and has lived in this coastal town for almost four hundred years. The author is also a descendant of Isaac Allerton, a Mayflower passenger that used Marblehead as a base for his fishing fleet. Along with the timeline and stories, are four hundred and twenty photographs and maps from the author's private collection. Thirty pages of genealogy in the back of the book show connections to most of Marblehead's old families. Hundreds of names are listed, with some families going back to the late 1500s. Old books, documents, town records, probate records, wills, old newspapers, interviews with Marbleheaders, family letters and other family documents were used in writing the book.

Just one short mile but a world away from affluent, neighboring Boston, Chelsea's historically Irish and eastern European Jewish populations had always made the city unique. A more recent wave of immigration from Puerto Rico and Central America brought about more diversity during a period of economic decline. Ethnically charged political competition and unprecedented levels of corruption eventually brought the small city to the brink of collapse. This gripping narrative focuses on Chelsea's most turbulent years, from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. Join photographer Arnie Jarmak and writer Joshua Resnek as they unveil the hardscrabble city they encountered and lived in during their early careers.

“[The author] tells the story of how her mother’s unexpected death forced her to come to terms with a tragic family past . . . A poignantly candid memoir.” —Kirkus Reviews When Anne Edelstein was forty-two, her mother, a capable swimmer in good health, drowned while snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef. Caring for two children of her own, Anne suddenly found herself grieving not only for her emotionally distant mother but also for her beloved younger brother Danny, who’d killed himself violently years before—and wrestling with the past and her family’s legacy of mental illness as well as the emotional well-being of her children. Part memoir and part meditation on joy and grief, Lifesaving for Beginners will resonate with anyone who’s struggled to come to terms with their family and their place in the world. “While dramatic events set this memoir in motion, the triumph of Lifesaving for Beginners is that its heart lies not in the large ruptures of life but in the reconciliations that arrive quietly and routinely. I admire—and envy—the writing in this book. Its smooth surface belies its depths, much like the open waters Edelstein swims in as she seeks her own calmness and consolation.” —Kathleen Finneran, author of The Tender Land “An unforgettable—and unputdownable—portrait of a singular American family. Reminiscent of Vivian Gornick’s Fierce Attachments and Daphne Merkin’s This Close to Happy.” —Joanna Rakoff, author of My Salinger Year “[This book] is indeed a lifesaver.” —Mark Epstein, author of Going to Pieces without Falling Apart

A baseball star’s luck is tested in this action-packed story—perfect for fans of Mike Lupica and Tim Green—from the author of The Kid Coach. Like many athletes, Trey is superstitious. How could he not be when he just made the Ravens travel baseball team thanks to his lucky charm, a piece of rare sea glass he found on his grandmother’s beach? This stroke of good fortune reinforces Trey’s superstitions, and his rituals only become more important to him. Despite some teasing from his teammates, he persists in never stepping on the foul line, obsessively tapping the corners of home plate when he’s at bat, and always choosing the same lucky bat. And his tactics are working; he’s doing quite well on the field and in the batter’s box. Then one day Trey can’t find his lucky sea glass. His performance begins to slip, and he’s convinced his future with the Ravens is doomed. Things don’t start to improve until Trey’s uncle reminds him of his grandmother’s favorite saying: “The harder you work, the luckier you get.” Can Trey take these words to heart and find his swing again . . . even without his lucky charm? This ebook features an afterword about famous real-life players with their own lucky charms and superstitions. Discussion Guide available “A former kids’ baseball coach and the writer of the Washington Post sports column for young readers, Bowen adds an entertaining note on baseball superstitions. . . . The straightforward story will appeal to young players as well as older ones intimidated by longer novels.” —Booklist
