The Civil War takes readers on a chronological journey of the most important events of the conflict with action-packed illustrations by Mort Künstler?the most collected Civil War artist in the world?and inquiry-based text award winning historian and author James I. Robertson, Jr. With close readings of Künstler’s paintings, young readers can parse the details of key moments of the war, including the Battle of Bull Run, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the Gettysburg Address, to learn how it really felt to be there. A timeline and short biographies of notable figures in the war, such as generals Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee, provide excellent supplements to each narrative chapter.

The Civil War is a much plumbed area of scholarship, so much so that at times it seems there is no further work to be done in the field. However, the experience of children and youth during that tumultuous time remains a relatively unexplored facet of the conflict. Children and Youth during the Civil War Era seeks a deeper investigation into the historical record by and giving voice and context to their struggles and victories during this critical period in American history. Prominent historians and rising scholars explore issues important to both the Civil War era and to the history of children and youth, including the experience of orphans, drummer boys, and young soldiers on the front lines, and even the impact of the war on the games children played in this collection. Each essay places the history of children and youth in the context of the sectional conflict, while in turn shedding new light on the sectional conflict by viewing it through the lens of children and youth. A much needed, multi-faceted historical account, Children and Youth during the Civil War Era touches on some of the most important historiographical issues with which historians of children and youth and of the Civil War home front have grappled over the last few years.

The Confederate prison known as Andersonville existed for only the last fourteen months of the Civil War?but its well-documented legacy of horror has lived on in the diaries of its prisoners and the transcripts of the trial of its commandant. The diaries describe appalling conditions in which vermin-infested men were crowded into an open stockade with a single befouled stream as their water source. Food was scarce and medical supplies virtually nonexistent. The bodies of those who did not survive the night had to be cleared away each morning. Designed to house 10,000 Yankee prisoners, Andersonville held 32,000 during August 1864. Nearly a third of the 45,000 prisoners who passed through the camp perished. Exposure, starvation, and disease were the main causes, but excessively harsh penal practices and even violence among themselves contributed to the unprecedented death rate. At the end of the war, outraged Northerners demanded retribution for such travesties, and they received it in the form of the trial and subsequent hanging of Captain Henry Wirz, the prison’s commandant. The trial was the subject of legal controversy for decades afterward, as many people felt justice was ignored in order to appease the Northerners’ moral outrage over the horrors of Andersonville. The story of Andersonville is a complex one involving politics, intrigue, mismanagement, unfortunate timing, and, of course, people - both good and bad. Relying heavily on first-person reports and legal documents, author Catherine Gourley gives us a fascinating look into one of the most painful incidents of U.S. history.

Abraham Lincoln, one of the greatest American presidents, was an unlikely figure to rise to power. After educating himself, he spent years practicing law on the frontier before coming to the White House. Charming many with his honesty and his rough, folksy humor -- and offending others with his unpolished ways -- Lincoln proved his intelligence, political savvy, and love of country by leading the nation through one of its bitterest trials, the Civil War (1861-1865). Brought down by an assassin's bullet at the end of the war, Lincoln is forever remembered as the man who preserved the Union and brought an end to slavery. Book jacket.
