Forest ecosystems are important because of the key role in reducing atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations by storing a large amount of carbon in biomass and soils. The relative amount of above-ground biomass allocated among different tree tissues is a functional indicator of forests’ health reflecting the material flow, the wood quality and the plant survival strategy. The way in which plants steer their photosynthetic product across their compartments is not fixed but likely vary over time, across growth economies and among species and, lastly, is influenced by plant size and climate, Obtaining a qualitative/quantitative understanding of the influence that these factors have in both growth and biomass allocation is of fundamental importance either in understanding plant ecology and evolution and into developing environmental policies and useful forest management practices to cope with future climate change.

Even though most of the biomass of the planet is in forests, we live in a world where wood as a raw material and its products are increasingly scarce. This is particularly so in important areas such as the European Community, which is far from self-sufficient in terms of wood. In recent years the need to intensify forest production and, in some cases, to uti lize abandoned agricultural land for forestry has focussed world-wide attention on the economic importance of fast-growing tree plantations. These are usually managed as short "rotations" (growing cycles) of less than 15 years, often for the production of industrial raw materials or biomass for energy. Under the designation of fast-growing tree plantations, or short rotation silviculture, one may find ecosystems managed for different economic objectives, with different intensities of technical intervention and different levels of productivity. They may include any of a wide range of species grown under various environmental conditions. A common factor, however, is the greater possibility that exists, relative to conventional forestry, for manipulation of both the environment and the genetics of the trees.

Lord Rutherford has said that all science is either physics or stamp collecting. On that basis the study of forest biomass must be classified with stamp collecting and other such pleasurable pursuits. Japanese scientists have led the world, not only in collecting basic data, but in their attempts to systematise our knowledge of forest biomass. They have studied factors affecting dry matter production of forest trees in an attempt to approach underlying phYf'ical principles. This edition of Professor Satoo's book has been made possible the help of Dr John F. Hosner and the Virginia Poly technical Institute and State University who invited Dr Satoo to Blacksburg for three months in 1973 at about the time when he was in the final stages of preparing the Japanese version. Since then the explosion of world literature on forest biomass has continued to be fired by increasing shortages of timber supplies in many parts of the world as well as by a need to explore renewable sources of energy. In revising the original text I have attempted to maintain the input of Japanese work - much of which is not widely available outside Japan - and to update both the basic information and, where necessary, the conclusions to keep them in tune with current thinking. Those familiar with the Japanese original will find Chapter 3 largely rewritten on the basis of new work - much of which was initiated while Dr Satoo was in Blacksburg.

The processes that underlie forest productivity and C allocation dynamics in trees are still poorly understood. Forest growth has for long been thought to be C limited, through a hypothesized causal link between C supply and growth (source control). This C-centric paradigm underlies most of the C allocation rules formalized in process-based models (PBMs). However, the source limitation of growth has been questioned by several authors, arguing that meristem activities are more sensitive than C assimilation to environmental stresses (e.g., water deficit and low temperatures). Moreover, the effect of management, which strongly affects forest functioning and wood growth, is not accounted for in most of the PBMs used to project the future terrestrial C sink. Our main objective in this thesis was to move forward into our understanding of the constraints that affect - or will affect - the wood productivity in European forests, from present to the end of the 21 st century. We addressed this objective through the improvement of the representation of the forest productivity and C allocation in the CASTANEA PBM, building on a detailed analysis of the key drivers of annual wood productivity in French forests over the last 30 years (the species studied are Fagus sylvatica, Quercus ilex, Quercus petraea, Quercus robur and Picea abies). Our results supported the premise that the annual wood growth of the studied species is under a complex control including both source and sink limitations. The inter-site variability in the fraction of C allocatedto stand wood growth was predominantly driven by an age-related decline. At the tree level, we showed that annual wood growth was well predicted by the individual size. The size-asymmetry of growth, i.e., the advantage of big trees in the competition for resources, increased consistently with the whole stand productivity at both inter-site and inter-annual scales. On the basis of our findings, we developed a new C allocation scheme in the CASTANEA PBM, which integrate a combined source-sink limitation of wood growth. The new calibrated model captured both the inter-annual and inter-site changes in stand wood growth that was observed across national environmental gradients. The model was also successfully evaluated against a meta-analysis of carbohydrate reserve pools in trees and satellite-derived leaf area index estimates. Our results indicated that the representation of the environmental control of sink activity does not affect the qualitative predictions of the future of the European forest productivity previously obtained from source-driven PBMs. However, the current, source-driven generation of PBMs probably underestimates the spatial heterogeneity of the effects of climate change on forest growth that arise from sink limitations.Further, we successfully used our findings regarding the dependences of annual wood growth at tree level (i.e., empirical rules of tree growth competition) to calibrate a module for the simulation of the individual growth of trees in the CASTANEA model. The coupled model was used to assess the potential effects of management on forest functioning and wood growth across France. We identified the areas where management efforts may be concentrated in order to mitigate near-future drought impact on national forest productivity. Around a quarter of the French temperate oak and beech forests are currently in zones of high vulnerability, where management could thus mitigate the influence of climate change on forest yield.

Trees are among the longest-living organisms. They are sensitive to extreme climatic events and document the effects of environmental changes in form of structural modifications of their tissues. These modifications represent an integrated signal of complex biological responses enforced by the environment. For example, temporal change in stem increment integrates multiple information of tree performance, and wood anatomical traits may be altered by climatic extremes or environmental stress. Recent developments in preparative tools and computational image analysis enable to quantify changes in wood anatomical features, like vessel density or vessel size. Thus, impacts on their functioning can be related to climatic forcing factors. Similarly, new developments in monitoring (cambial) phenology and mechanistic modelling are enlightening the interrelationships between environmental factors, wood formation and tree performance and mortality. Quantitative wood anatomy is a reliable indicator of drought occurrence during the growing season, and therefore has been studied intensively in recent years. The variability in wood anatomy not only alters the biological and hydraulic functioning of a tree, but may also influence the technological properties of wood, with substantial impacts in forestry. On a larger scale, alterations of sapwood and phloem area and their ratios to other functional traits provide measures to detect changes in a tree’s life functions, and increasing risk of drought-induced mortality with possible impacts on hydrological processes and species composition of plant communities. Genetic variability within and across populations is assumed to be crucial for species survival in an unpredictable future world. The magnitude of genetic variation and heritability of adaptive traits might define the ability to adapt to climate change. Is there a relation between genetic variability and resilience to climate change? Is it possible to link genetic expression and climate change to obtain deeper knowledge of functional genetics? To derive precise estimates of genetic determinism it is important to define adaptive traits in wood properties and on a whole-tree scale. Understanding the mechanisms ruling these processes is fundamental to assess the impact of extreme climate events on forest ecosystems, and to provide realistic scenarios of tree responses to changing climates. Wood is also a major carbon sink with a long-term residence, impacting the global carbon cycle. How well do we understand the link between wood growth dynamics, wood carbon allocation and the global carbon cycle? Papers contribution to this Research Topic will cover a wide range of ecosystems. However, special relevance will be given to Mediterranean-type areas. These involve coastal regions of four continents, making Mediterranean-type ecosystems extremely interesting for investigating the potential impacts of global change on growth and for studying responses of woody plants under extreme environmental conditions.
