Present day advanced technologies heavily rely on one particular class of matter, i.e. the crystals. It is the periodic nature of the atoms and the properties arising due to the periodicity in crystals that is exploited to meet various technological feats. The technological revolutions in the semiconductor, optics and communication industries are the examples. The anisotropy in the crystals gives them enhanced properties as required in the field of non-linear optics. The field of non-linear optics became practically a reality after the invention of lasers. The coherent and monochromatic optical beams in the visible and ultraviolet ranges are in high demand due to their application in the fields like material processing, semiconductor lithography, laser micromachining, laser spectroscopy, photochemical synthesis, inertial confinement fusion and other basic scientific studies. In this thesis, work on the growth and characterization of two technologically important non-linear optical crystals has been carried out after developing the necessary instrumentation and some novel techniques for synthesis and growth. Also, studies on the glassy nature of one of the crystals have been carried out. This thesis consists of seven chapters. The first chapter gives a brief introduction to the nonlinear optical phenomenon, crystal growth and glassy state. Instrumentation is the backbone of crystal research technology. Without precision growth equipments large size crystals cannot be grown and without precision characterization instrumentation no conclusion regarding the quality and usefulness of the grown material can be drawn. The work reported in Chapter 2 describes the instrumentation developed for the growth, processing and characterization of crystals grown by solution and melt growth techniques. In low temperature solution growth, crystal growth workstations have been developed using tanks (made of acrylic), heating elements, and stirring propellers. Cooling coils have been in.

Nonlinear optics is a new frontier of science and technology playing a major role in the emerging era of photonics. Photonics involves the application of photons for information and image processing and is branded to be the technology of the 21st century, wherein nonlinear optical (NLO) processes have applications in the vital functions such as frequency conversion and optical switching. These require materials exhibiting second-order NLO effects and hence there is a great need for device quality single crystals. Materials with large second-order nonlinearities, short transparency cut-off wavelengths and stable physicochemical performances are needed in order to realize many of the applications.L-alanine family of crystals are found to promising materials for NLO applications. Most of the chemical analogs of L-alanine exhibit remarkable NLO property. This book briefly explains the nonlinear optical theory, various methods of crystal growth and characterization techniques. Also explains the growth and properties of Alanine complexes namely, L-alaninium oxalate (LAO), L-alaninium maleate (LAM), Mono-L-alaninium nitrate (MAN) and L-alaninium tartrate (LAT) single crystals.

Nonlinear optics and ferroelectrics have been recognized for several decades as promising fields with important applications in the area of opto-electronics, photonics, memory devices, etc. High performance electro-optical switching elements for telecommunications and optical information processing are based on the material properties. Hence, there is always a continuous search for new and better materials. In this thesis we have investigated the growth and physical properties of four crystals viz. two NLO and two ferroelectric crystals. This thesis consists of eight chapters. The first chapter gives an overview of historical perspectives of nonlinear optical phenomenon, ferroelectricity and materials developed therein. The second chapter gives a brief description of the underlying theories of crystal growth, nonlinear optics and ferroelectricity. A major portion of this chapter consists of gist of the earlier work carried out on compounds of our interest viz. urea L-malic acid, sodium p-nitrophenolate dihydrate, glycine phosphite and lithium niobate. Synthesis, growth, crystal structure details and some physical properties of these materials are briefed. The third chapter describes the experimental techniques needed to grow as well as characterize these crystals. The experiments are performed on single crystals grown in the laboratory using the solution growth setup and Czochralski crystal puller. These growth units are described in detail. Preliminary characterization techniques like powder Xray diffraction, optical transmission, scanning electron microscopy, Vickers and Knoop hardness are described briefly. Various experimental methods viz. dielectric, polarization reversal, photoacoustic spectroscopy and laser induced damage for characterizing the grown crystals are explained. Urea L-malic acid (ULMA) is a new NLO organic material which is reported to exhibit second harmonic efficiency three times that of the widely used inorganic crystal, KDP. Hence, this mater.

Photonic band gap materials (or photonic crystals) are periodic dielectric structures with periodicities comparable to the wavelength of light. They offer promising solutions to various scientific and technological challenges. The work in this thesis is focused on fabrication and characterization techniques for photonic crystals and the study of linear and nonlinear optical phenomena in these periodic structures. brief theoretical background of photonic band gap materials is provided in chapter 1. Chapter 2 describes a method for the fabrication of highly ordered photonic crystals by using self-assembly of colloids of dielectric spheres. In this chapter, the conditions that increase the level of perfection and the factors that give better control over the crystallization process are investigated and their theoretical interpretations are discussed. Also infiltration of a high refractive index material (GaP) into the crystals is investigated. Methods for generation of third harmonics in two different photonic crystal media are presented in chapter 3. In the first case, observation of a highly enhanced one-step, third-harmonic generation in three dimensional photonic crystals formed by close-packed polystyrene spheres in a face centered cubic arrangement, is presented. A near infrared laser beam, with a wavelength range of 1300nm-1900nm, is used as the pump source. In the second case, a strong enhancement of one-step third-harmonic generation in a one dimensional photonic crystal is presented. In this case, a near infrared laser beam is tuned to the low frequency edge of the band gap of a photonic crystal prepared from polymer dispersed liquid crystals by holographic lithography. Chapter 4 presents the results of linear and nonlinear optical studies in photonic crystal alloys which are formed by various compositions of polystyrene and polymethlymethacrylate colloidal spheres of the same size. Linear transmittance and reflectance measurements as well as third-harmonic generation experiments were conducted in these photonic crystal alloys. The observed experimental result is fitted to a calculated plot by assuming an effective dielectric constant for the colloidal spheres. In chapter 5, another promising method of fabrication of photonic crystals, holographic lithography, is described. A procedure and optimum growth parameters for the fabrication of fcc-like photonic crystals are presented. Summary and future plans related to the work in this thesis are given in the conclusions and future work section.
