Contemporary capitalistic systems have been undergoing profound transformations determined by the transition towards the so-called knowledge based economy, i.e. a competitive system based on the capabilities firms have to create, use and circulate knowledge. These transformations concern both the characteristics of productive and innovative processes, and the resources used in these activities. This book captures these changes, where traditional R&D investments undertaken internally by firms are increasingly and strategically complemented by external sources of innovation and new knowledge. Collaborations between firms, and between firms and other organizations, as well as the mobility of human capital, are strategic processes in order to share and circulate knowledge and competencies. They are also key determinants in the creation of new knowledge and innovation, and ultimately in growth dynamics. The circulation and distribution of knowledge is now a key input in the production of knowledge. Knowledge and innovation are understood as the result of collective and interactive processes at the system level, and less at the micro level. In other words, new knowledge production is less and less the result of individualistic behaviours of the firms and much more the effect of explicit and pro-active interactions and transactions put in place by local networks of innovators. In this perspective, economic space is much more defined by the quality of the interactions among actors rather than by their mere technological, sectoral or geographical proximity. This book brings together new conceptual and empirical contributions and blends the analysis of the technological and geographical spaces in which innovation and knowledge are produced.

Due to the growing significance of internationalization, engaging in export drive has grown up among SMEs for seeking natural growth. Literature on export has shown that the effectiveness and efficiency of distribution channel become a critical issue for export performance. Whilst acknowledging that the characteristic of distribution channels is generally difficult to change once established findings of previous studies strengthen the indications that firm performance is also governed by affiliation among channel members on managing coordination, avoiding conflict, achieving sales and profit, exchanging information, trusting and holding commitment as well as how the applications of non formal channels, position of channel members; multiple distribution channels’ establishments; importers linkage establishments; and decentralization. The importance of innovation including innovation in distribution channels as the driver of performance is inconclusive. Additionally, such a study is extremely limited in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Therefore, this study examines the impact of distribution channel innovation on the activities upon firm performance. Based on the existing literature gap, a special attention was given to the mediating role of distribution channel performance in the relationship between distribution channel innovation and firm performance of SMEs. Using a total of 120 samples collected from export-oriented agriculture-based SMEs in DIY province and the surrounding areas of the Central Java, Indonesia; a hierarchical regression analysis was used to estimate the distribution channel innovation-firm performance model. The clearer findings were found how the innovations lead to firm performance. It was indicated innovation in assortment, information sharing and transportation coordination led to greater firm performance. The result of the study also shows that distribution performance mediated the relationship between innovations in assortment, information sharing and transportation coordination, and firm performance. The contributors argue that there need not be a trade-off between growth and equity in the long run. However, attempts by government to influence income distribution through large-scale tax and transfer programs can have a negative impact on growth. The contrast is vivid. While the majority of people in the industrial world and some in the developing world enjoy unprecedented affluence, a far greater number of people in the low-income countries live in abject poverty. Although several developing countries are achieving rapid economic growth and poverty reduction, most formerly centrally planned countries are struggling to implement market-oriented reforms in the midst of economic deterioration and rising poverty. The paramount importance of reducing poverty worldwide is forcing economists and policymakers to look at how income distribution and economic growth interact. The essays in this volume grew out of a 1995 conference sponsored by the International Monetary Fund. The contributors are scholars and policymakers from academic institutions, governments, and international organizations. The questions discussed include: How does income distribution interact with economic growth in the short run and the long run? To what extent can government use transfer programs to increase the incomes of the poor? How can government use social programs to help the poor increase their income-earning capacity? Does distributional inequality create an obstacle to long-term poverty reduction? Alternatively, is distributional inequality a necessary means of achieving economic growth?
