Growth Factors: Cellular Growth Processes, Growth Factors, Hormonal Control of Growth is a compilation of papers from the 11th Meeting of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies in Copenhagen in 1977. The book explains the process that leads to cell replication in vitro and to actual growth in vivo. One paper then examines the use of a combined method to analyze growth control in a culture specimen. Another paper notes the evidence favoring the hypotheses that a delicately regulated increase in the amount of adenine and guanine nucleotide can affect significantly the metabolic pattern of cells that are likely to begin a new mitotic cycle. The book also discusses the possibility that natural polyamines can serve as growth factors and regulate cell growth in some microorganisms and in cell lines of animal origin. Consequently, the use of polyamine measurements to diagnose markers in human malignancies is one practical application of polyamine metabolism. The book also explains the effect of collagen on the chondrogenic differentiation of somite and limb bud mesenchyme on the biochemical processes in bone and cartilage formation. Another paper then discusses the effects of sex hormones on the growth of normal tissues, particularly on lean and fat tissues. The critical role of growth factors in normal as well as abnormal cellular growth and function has become overwhelmingly apparent in recent years. The significant advances in reproductive biology within this rapidly expanding field were highlighted at the Serono Symposia, USA, symposium entitled Growth Factors in Reproduc tion. The conference focused on growth factors as polyfunctional regulators of growth and development in the reproductive system. The program was organized into five areas: (1) growth factors as polyfunctional regulators of growth and development, (2) growth factors and gonadal function, (3) regulation of normal and neoplastic mammary growth, (4) regulatory peptides in reproductive tract development and function, and (5) embryo-maternal signaling. This volume constitutes the contributions ofthe invited symposium speakers and is organized into sections representing the five topic areas of the sessions. Drs. Eli Y. Adashi, Robert B. Dickson, David C. Lee, James Hammond, John A. McLachlan, and R. Michael Roberts, who served as chairmen ofthese sessions, not only provided invaluable advice and assistance in organizing the symposium, but contributed significantly to its content. The enthusiasm and esprit de corps of the poster presenters and discussion participants also helped make this symposium succeed as the first of its kind. Finally, special thanks are due Drs. This two-volume treatise, the collected effort of more than 50 authors, represents the first comprehensive survey of the chemistry and biology of the set of molecules known as peptide growth factors. Although there have been many symposia on this topic, and numerous publications of reviews dealing with selected subsets of growth factors, the entire field has never been covered in a single treatise. It is essential to do this at the present time, as the number of journal articles on peptide growth factors now makes it almost impossible for anyone person to stay informed on this subject by reading the primary literature. At the same time it is becoming increasingly apparent that these of universal importance in biology and medicine and that the substances are original classification of these molecules, based on the laboratory setting of their discovery, as "growth factors," "lymphokines," "cytokines," or "colony stimulating factors," was quite artifactual; they are in fact the basis of a com mon language for intercellular communication. As a set they affect essentially every cell in the body, and in this regard they provide the basis to develop a unified science of cell biology, germane to all of biomedical research. This treatise is divided into four main sections. After three introductory chapters, its principal focus is the detailed description of each of the major peptide growth factors in 26 individual chapters.
