Developing theoretical models that contribute to a better understanding of the wealth of nations, particularly those factors determining economic growth, unemployment, and the sectoral composition of economies, de Groot (environmental economics, Free U., Amsterdam) addresses the major indicators of economic performance: productivity levels, productivity growth, unemployment rates, and degree of industrialization. Special issues include the macroeconomic consequences of outsourcing and downsizing, causes of deindustrialization, the role of trade unions and efficiency-wage considerations, and the relationship between growth and unemployment in a dual labor market. All advanced economies have experienced a secular decline in the share of manufacturing employment—a phenomenon referred to as deindustrialization. This paper argues that, contrary to popular perceptions, deindustrialization is not a negative phenomenon, but is the natural consequence of the industrial dynamism in an already developed economy, and that North-South trade has had very little to do with deindustrialization. The paper also discusses the implications of deindustrialization for the growth prospects and the nature of labor market arrangements in the advanced economies.

Disrupted Development And The Future Of Inequality In The Age Of Automation written by Lukas Schlogl and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-01-13 with Social Science categories.

This open access book examines the future of inequality, work and wages in the age of automation with a focus on developing countries. The authors argue that the rise of a global ‘robot reserve army’ has profound effects on labor markets and economic development, but, rather than causing mass unemployment, new technologies are more likely to lead to stagnant wages and premature deindustrialization. The book illuminates the debate on the impact of automation upon economic development, in particular issues of poverty, inequality and work. It highlights public policy responses and strategies–ranging from containment to coping mechanisms—to confront the effects of automation.

De-industrialization processes have accompanied industrialization from the start, both regionally and globally. Most historical studies of de-industrialization focus on economic issues, including structural causes and forms of unemployment. Much less attention is usually paid to the social and cultural aspects. What are the consequences of de-industrialization for working-class families and their communities? How does de-industrialization affect working-class culture, trade unions traditional labour parties, and the regional social, educational and cultural infrastructure? Are gender relations changed by de-industrialization? The essays here propose a wide scope for the study of industrial devolution.

Employment And Re Industrialisation In Post Soeharto Indonesia written by Mohammad Zulfan Tadjoeddin and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-05-15 with Political Science categories.

This book studies the challenges for Indonesia, once a miracle economy, as it faces premature deindustrialisation, rising inequality and domestic and external factors impacting its export-oriented industrialization. Since the fall of Soeharto, Indonesia has undergone a far-reaching systemic transition from centralised and autocratic governance to a highly decentralised and democratic system. Complicated by regional variations, the country is now being called upon to respect labour rights and, amidst slow global economic recovery, is facing increased competition from other low-labour-cost countries, especially within the ASEAN Economic Community. Tadjoeddin and Chowdhury posit that Indonesia cannot recreate its past miracle based on cheap labour and suppression of labour rights. It will need to move quickly to high value-added activities driven by productivity growth and to develop its domestic market.
