The contract for the new Grumman Cougar (G-93) was signed on March 2, 1951. The first flight of the XF9F-6 Cougar was on September 20, 1951. When Grumman and the Navy first discussed the Panther, both parties had privy to the Navy Technical Team findings in German WW-II research immediately after the war and the fact that many of the top German fighter designers had "migrated" to our new enemy, Russia. This information put firm emphasis on the greater critical Mach number with the swept wing over a convention straight-wing fighter for both the U.S. and the USSR.

The first swept-wing carrier-based fighter aircraft built for the US Navy, the F9F Cougar, marked a major leap forward in naval aircraft design from its predecessor, the straight-wing Grumman F9F Panther. The prototype of the first version of the Cougar, the F9F-6, first took to the air in September 1951, just six months after contract award. There were several different models of the Cougar, reflecting its varied uses as well as the general development of the aircraft. The F9F-6 was followed by the F9F-7 and F9F-8. In addition, there were also two reconnaissance models, F9F-6P and F9F-8P, as well as a two-seater trainer version, F9F-8T. The contemporary photographs in this volume illustrate in detail the differences between the various Cougar models, making use of more than a dozen display aircraft located in museums across the US as well as one Cougar on display in Argentina. Grounded in solid historical research, the book also features historical images from the photo archives of both the US Navy and Grumman, and also includes rare photos of F9F Cougar in its final days, serving as a target drone for later generations of fighters.

Spyplanes written by Norman Polmar and has been published by Quarto Publishing Group USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-20 with History categories.

A comprehensive history with descriptions of the world's most significant aircraft employed as "eyes in the sky."For as long as there has been sustained heavier-than-air human flight, airplanes have been used to gather information about our adversaries. Less than a decade after the Wright Brothers flew at Kitty Hawk, Italian pilots were keeping tabs on Turkish foes in Libya. Today, aircraft with specialized designs and sensory equipment still cruise the skies, spying out secrets in the never-ending quest for an upper hand.Spyplanes tackles the sprawling legacy of manned aerial reconnaissance, from hot air balloons to cloth-and-wood biplanes puttering over the Western Front, and on through every major world conflict, culminating with spyplanes cruising at supersonic speeds 85,000 feet above the Earth's surface. Authors Norman Polmar and John Bessette offer a concise yet comprehensive overview history of aerial recon, exploring considerations such as spyplanes in military doctrine, events like the Cuban Missile Crisis and the downing of Francis Gary Powers' U-2, the 1992 Open Skies Treaty, and the USAF's Big Safari program.Polmar and Bessette, along with a roster of respected aviation journalists, also profile 70 renowned fixed-wing spyplanes from World I right up to the still-conceptual hypersonic SR-72. The authors examine the design, development, and service history of each aircraft, and offer images and specification boxes that detail vital stats for each. Included are purpose-built spyplanes, as well as legendary fighters and bombers that have been retrofitted for the purpose. In addition, the authors feature preliminary chapters discussing the history of aerial surveillance and a host of sidebars that explore considerations such as spyplanes in military doctrine, events like the Cuban missile crisis and the downing of Francis Gary Powers' U-2, the 1992 Open Skies Treaty, and the USAF's current Big Safari program. From prop-driven to jet-powered aircraft, this is the ultimate history and reference to those "eyes in the skies" that have added mind-bending technologies, not to mention an element of intrigue, to military aviation for more than a century.

The first U.S. Navy aerial photographs were taken in 1913 in support of fleet exercises off Guantanamo, Cuba. Following WWI, a Navy Photographic expedition went north, making the first aerial mapping photos of the Alaskan territory. WWII found Navy shuttermen in the Pacific theatre, performing pre- and post-attack reconnaissance, along with "hitting the beach" to record the war as it unfolded. Shortly after, Navy photographic units were in the Pacific to record early atomic bomb tests. The Navy's aerial photo reconnaissance mission, both at the front end with the weaponless aircrews and the output of thousands of images and photo interpretation, continued to develop through the mid-20th century. The last aerial photo plane in the Navy's inventory was retired after flying to the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum Annex at Dulles International Airport in Fairfax County, Virginia. The 74 year odyssey of Navy and Marine Corps aerial reconnaissance photography was finished.

Most books on the Cuban Missile Crisis tell the story using the memoirs of those who advised President Kennedy as he struggled to avoid World War III. This book is the only known personal account of the lead photographic reconnaissance squadron's scouting dangerous low-level operations, flying the supersonic RF-8A Crusader, during the classified Operation Blue Moon. Captain Ecker was the commanding officer of US Navy Light Photographic Squadron 62 (VFP-62, otherwise known as “Fightin' Photo”) during the Cuban Missile Crisis, a team created for reconnaissance and aerial photography, and consulted on the movie Thirteen Days, which included dramatic scenes of his first mission over Cuba on October 23, 1962. Blue Moon over Cuba is an authoritative and complete account of the low-level reconnaissance that might be said to have helped JFK avert nuclear Armageddon.

It begins with a look at the developmental history of the Dauntless, from its beginning as a Northrop design taken over by the Douglas Aircraft Company through its full operational life, including the pivotal role the Dauntless played in the defeat of the Japanese carrier force at the decisive Battle of Midway. Each variant of the Dauntless is covered in its own section, including the six main variants of the SBD and the A-24 Banshee version used by the United States Army Air Forces. The aircraft details chapter, long the hallmark of the Detail & Scale Series, covers the cockpit, canopy, fuselage, wings, landing gear, tail, engine, and offensive and defensive armament, and contains more than 140 photos, mostly in color, that illustrate every aspect of this important aircraft.Another chapter covers the evolution of the colors and markings used by the Dauntless family of aircraft, from the colorful pre-war "yellow wings" scheme through the tri-color scheme worn by the aircraft until the end of the war.
