Die sieben Bände der Reihe „Grundkurs Theoretische Physik“ sind als direkte - gleiter zum Hochschulstudium Physik gedacht. Sie sollen in kompakter Form das wichtigste theoretisch-physikalische Rüstzeug vermitteln, auf dem aufgebaut werden kann, um anspruchsvollere Themen und Probleme im fortgeschrittenen Studium und in der physikalischen Forschung bewältigen zu können. Die Konzeption ist so angelegt, dass der erste Teil des Kurses, Klassische Mechanik (Band 1) Analytische Mechanik (Band 2) Elektrodynamik (Band 3) Spezielle Relativitätstheorie, Thermodynamik (Band 4), als Theorieteil eines „Integrierten Kurses“ aus Experimentalphysik und Theoretischer Physik, wie er inzwischen an zahlreichen deutschen Universitäten vom ersten Sem- ter an angeboten wird, zu verstehen ist. Die Darstellung ist deshalb bewusst ausfü- lich, manchmal sicher auf Kosten einer gewissen Eleganz, und in sich abgeschlossen gehalten, sodass der Kurs auch zum Selbststudium ohne Sekundärliteratur geeignet ist. Es wird nichts vorausgesetzt, was nicht an früherer Stelle der Reihe behandelt worden ist. Dies gilt inbesondere auch für die benötigte Mathematik, die vollst- dig so weit entwickelt wird, dass mit ihr theoretisch-physikalische Probleme bereits vom Studienbeginn an gelöst werden können. Dabei werden die mathematischen Einschübe immer dann eingefügt, wenn sie für das weitere Vorgehen im Programm der Theoretischen Physik unverzichtbar werden. Es versteht sich von selbst, dass in einem solchen Konzept nicht alle mathematischen Theorien mit absoluter Strenge bewiesen und abgeleitet werden können. Da muss bisweilen ein Verweis auf entsp- chende mathematische Vorlesungen und vertiefende Lehrbuchliteratur erlaubt sein.

This book offers the first systematic review of the structuralism of physical theories. Particular emphasis is placed on the inclusion of empirical imprecision into formal reconstructions of theories. The proposed measure of imprecision allows for a topological comparison of theories. Considering the ongoing debates on the nature of the thermodynamic limit in statistical mechanics, as well as on limit relations between classical and quantum mechanics, the author asserts that the Bourbaki-style structuralism, together with E. Scheibe's theory of reduction, is the best choice for reconstructing and analyzing the related questions of reduction and emergence. Readers will appreciate the critical overview of the main positions in philosophy of science, examined with particular attention to their applicability to current problems of fundamental theories of physics.

This textbook is intended for both undergraduate and graduate courses in meteorology and atmospheric sciences, as well as for researchers working on theoretical and numerical aspects of weather and climate or on geophysical fluid dynamics. The treatment is concise, thorough, and self-contained. All necessary concepts are introduced, and the reader is given explicit guidance on all mathematical steps. The book begins with a derivation of the equations of motion. These are then used to discuss fundamental aspects of weather and climate. The mechanisms behind vortical motions, that are known from the daily weather map, are discussed. Shallow-water theory is introduced as a tool for an efficient analysis of key concepts, such as atmospheric waves and synoptic-scale vortices. Quasigeostrophic theory is described and then used to explain the occurrence and mechanisms of extratropical weather by means of baroclinic instability. The specific properties of the atmospheric boundary layer are discussed, with a focus on the interaction between turbulence and mean flows. This is followed by a detailed look at the global atmospheric circulation, highlighting its control by Rossby waves and gravity waves. At the same time, the reader is introduced to essential concepts that find applications in the field, such as balance by geostrophic and hydrostatic equilibrium, the role of entropy and potential temperature, potential vorticity, the Kelvin theorem, instability theory, the Reynolds equations, Eliassen-Palm and pseudo-momentum flux, multi-scale asymptotics, WKB theory, wave action, the transformed Eulerian mean, critical layers, and wave refraction.
