Einleitung Lange bevor ein Kind in die Schule kommt und dort intensiv mit Sprache, Schrift, und deren Reflexion konfrontiert wird, hat es gelernt, sich mitzuteilen und sprachlich auszudrücken, wodurch es auch schon ein gewisses Maß an Sprachbewusstsein entwickelt hat. Da das Kind vom Beginn seines Lebens von einer sprachlichen Umwelt umgeben ist, kommt es gar nicht umhin dieser auszuweichen. Es entsteht also schon sehr früh ein bestimmtes Gefühl für die Sprache, das bei jedem Kind aber individuell unterschiedlich ausgeprägt ist. „Der Schuleintritt ist demnach nicht die Stunde null für den Schriftspracherwerb, denn die Kinder unterscheiden sich bereits bei der Einschulung enorm hinsichtlich der Vorläufermerkmale, die den späteren Erfolg beim Lesen – und Schreibenlernen in erheblichem Ausmaß vorhersagen.“1 Diese Vorläufermerkmale sind grundlegende und notwendige Voraussetzungen für den erfolgreichen Schriftspracherwerb. Dazu gehören zum einen die akustische und optische Sprachwahrnehmung und zum anderen der bewusste Umgang mit lautsprachlichem Material, also der phonologischen Bewusstheit. Ist eine dieser beiden Ebenen gestört, ist es sehr wahrscheinlich, dass auch beim Lesen und/ oder Rechtschreiben Probleme auftreten werden. Da die Überprüfung dieser Fähigkeiten vor dem Schuleintritt, wie eine Reihe von Längsschnittuntersuchungen gezeigt hat, offensichtlich eine Vorhersage für den späteren Erfolg beim Lesen und Schreibenlernen erlaubt, sind schon einige Test – und Trainingsverfahren wie zum Beispiel das „Bielefelder Screening“, oder das Würzburger Programm zur Förderung der phonologischen Bewusstheit „Hören, Lauschen, Lernen“, entwickelt worden, um frühzeitig Probleme zu erkennen und gegebenenfalls zu fördern. Denn Kinder, bei denen Lese – Rechtschreibschwierigkeiten vorhersagbar scheinen, profitieren in großem Maße von einer Förderung ihrer Sprachwahrnehmung und phonologischen Bewusstheit, da sich die Schwierigkeiten so erst gar nicht ausprägen können. Eine frühzeitige Förderung ist folglich von enorm großer Bedeutung.

Life without these skills is almost impossible and comes with a high level of complications and compromises. In 2003, almost 862 million people were illiterate worldwide. One of the main tasks of a primary school teacher is that he teaches his pupils how to read and write and is able to understand the processes of writing development. Especially in the last 20 years, experts have increasingly dealt with the topic of written language acquisition. It was not until 1976 that the term written language acquisition was introduced into the German discussion, first by Weigl and later primarily by Brügelmann. Not least because of the PISA studies, society was once again confronted with this topic and its related problems. But how do you actually learn to read and write? What are the requirements for a child to learn to read and write? What stages and phases does it go through? I would like to deal with these questions in my paper. I will present three development models of written language acquisition in detail and then make a short critical review. I chose the models by Günther, Valtin and Spitta because they are among the most up-to-date development models and were also presented in the advanced seminar “Written Language Acquisition and Spelling”. I would also like to ask myself what development models achieve and why they were chosen for written language acquisition.

The purpose of this volume is to present recent research in the field of the acquisition of functional literacy and its precursors. The volume aims to capture the state of the art in this rapidly expanding field. An attempt is made to clarify the vague and often inconsistent definitions of functional literacy from the perspective of development. Cognitive, linguistic, educational, and social factors of literacy development are all taken into account. The volume consists of three subsequent parts. The first part goes into phonological precursors of literacy development. In this part the focus is on the development of early language precursors of of reading and writing. The cultural foundations of these precursors are explored, and their links with reading development are dealt with in detail. Different psycholinguistic approaches are also proposed to explain the occurrence of literacy problems.
