Die Deutungen des Bildungsbegriffs in der Erwachsenenbildung scheinen gegenwartig von einer kaum noch zu uberschauenden Pluralitat zu sein. Eine genaue Analyse der Grundlegungen von Bildung stellt diese Pluralitat jedoch infrage: Trotz aller Unterschiede in den Inhalten, Zielen und Methoden fuhren die verschiedenen Deutungen von Bildung in letzter Instanz immer wieder auf die Kategorien Subjekt und Gesellschaft beziehungsweise deren Bedingungs- oder Spannungsverhaltnis zuruck. Demgegenuber geht Theodor Ballauff (1911-1995) gerade von der Zuruckweisung von Subjekt und Gesellschaft als leitenden Kategorien von Erwachsenenbildung aus. Ihnen stellt er den Ausgang von Massgaben entgegen, welche den Bildungsbegriff umgrenzen, ohne auf subjektive oder gesellschaftliche Letztbegrundungen zuruckzugreifen. Der Vergleich dieser kontraren Grundlegungen ruckt die Frage nach dem glq Erwachsenen grq und seiner glq Bildung grq unter dem Aspekt ins Bewusstsein, den Bildungsbegriff nicht vorschnell an die Beliebigkeit der Deutungen preiszugeben und damit einer Pluralitat das Wort zu reden, die gegen jede Kritik immunisiert.
