Die Neuausgabe gab Gelegenheit, das eher dogmatisch angelegte Kapitel über "Wesen und Bedeutung der Sakramente" durch ein Kapitel zur Theologie der Liturgie zu ersetzen. Ebenso schien es sachgerechter zu sein, die bisherigen Kapitel über Taufe und Firmung in ein neues Kapitel über die Feiern der christlichen Initiation zu integrieren. Darüber hinaus wurde der Grundriss wieder vollständig durchgesehen und an vielen Stellen aktualisiert, so dass auch die einschlägigen Akzente im Pontifikat von Papst Franziskus berücksichtigt sind.

From her very beginning, the Church has been entrusted with the universal commission to “make disciples of all nations” (Matt 28:19), offering to the entire world the new life and communion with God that is made available in Christ through Baptism and the Christian confession of faith. Dem hat sich Christian Binder detailliert in seiner Quellenanalyse zugewandt und das Für und Wider in dieser Diskussion einander kritisch gegenübergestellt und in eine eigene Stellungnahme münden lassen. Die Arbeit bietet nicht nur eine auch für den fachlichen Laien gut verständliche Analyse der Quellen, sondern auch eine darauf basierende engagierte Positionsbestimmung, mit der die fachwissenschaftliche Diskussion bereichert wird.
