Trailblazers, the second book in the Guardians of Peace series, continues where Refined by Fire left off, and provides readers an unparalleled look at the integration of women into the modern Army and concludes with Lori and Trish graduating from the prestigious United States Military Academy. The First World War threw the imperial order into crisis. New states emerged from the great European land empires, while Germany's African and Pacific colonies, and the Ottoman provinces in the Middle East fell into allied hands. Britain, France, Belgium, Japan, and the British dominions wanted to keep the new states, but Woodrow Wilson and the millions converted to the ideal of self-determination thought otherwise. At the Paris Peace conference of 1919, the allies agreed reluctantly to govern their new conquests according to international and humanitarian norms and under 'mandate' from the League of Nations. As The Guardians shows, this decision had enormous consequences. The allies sought to use the League to safeguard imperial authority, but that authority was undermined by the mechanisms for international oversight they had themselves created. Colonial nationalists and humanitarians exploited new rights of petition or opportunities for publicity to expose abuses or scandals; Germans resentful of the loss of their colonies and Italians eager to found a new empire arrived in Geneva to demand a repartition of the spoils. As imperial politicians wearied of continual scandals and crises - revolts in South West Africa, Syria, Samoa, and Palestine; famine in Rwanda; labour abuses in New Guinea; extortionate oil contracts in Iraq - they began to question whether independent states might be easier to deal with than territories subject to international scrutiny. Drawing on research in four continents and dozens of archives, and bringing to life a global network of nationalists, humanitarians, international bureaucrats, and imperial statesmen, The Guardians offers an entirely new interpretation of the importance of international organizations in the emergence of the modern world order.

In the summer of 1976, the first women were admitted to the United States Military Academy, and the first women to complete a four-year ROTC program were commissioned as second lieutenants. Lori, Maura, Anne, and Amelia’s journey into a male-dominated Army are chronicled in this exciting, page-turning adventure, as they face the challenges of being accepted into an army that is struggling to integrate women head on. Refined by Fire shares the women’s uncertainty, frustration, and friendship, while accurately depicting the challenges both the academy cadets and active-duty lieutenants encountered in the United States Army of the mid-1970s. Refined by Fire, the first novel in the Guardians of Peace historical fiction series by Ruth VanDyke and Yvonne Doll, weaves a tale of young women surviving and thriving in sometimes difficult and completely uncharted circumstances.

Athena Unleashed is the third book in the Guardians of Peace historical fiction series depicting the experiences of the first female Army ROTC officers and the first women to attend and graduate from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. In Athena Unleashed, the story begins in the summer of 1980 as Army Captains Maura Collins and Anne Deveraux are enroute to Fort Bragg for their assignments in the 82nd Airborne Division. Lori Nelson is a new Army Lieutenant having completed airborne training before attending her military police officer basic course at Fort McClellan, Alabama. Experience their military stories while stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The story continues through 1983 as Lori is battle tested with the leadership highs and lows she encounters in the U.S. Army, while Maura seasons her resolve in her unique and challenging chemical corps assignments in the Division. Their journey into a male dominated army is chronicled in this exciting, page-turning adventure. “I’m hooked on the Guardians of Peace series! Refined by Fire and Trailblazers transported me back to the beginning of my Army career in the early1970s when I was assigned to Germany. My experiences in Europe were almost exactly the same as the women officers portrayed. Athena Unleashed is equally compelling and does a fantastic job of portraying the difficulties, hardships and successes experienced by the first women to join the “All American” Division. I was assigned to Ft. Bragg and the 82d Airborne Division in 1977. The 21st Chemical Company (Airborne) was one of the initial units to integrate women into 82d formations. My female soldiers and NCOs were phenomenal and many became future leaders in the Chemical Corps. I might never have realized this series existed if Ruth had not asked me to read the books and more importantly, I wouldn’t have been captured by the great portrayal of the integration of women into the Army’s fighting forces. Keep writing and telling the story that changed the Army for the better.” John Doesburg, MG, USA, (RET), Honorary Colonel of the Chemical Corps Regiment
