Warfare Since the Second World War presents a wealth of analysis and data about one of the most pressing questions of our time: why does war continue to plague us fifty years after World War II? This book argues that the nature of war has shifted from inter-state conflicts toward internal conflicts, above all civil war. Low-intensity conflict helps explain the constant increase in wars over the last fifty years and makes it probable this trend will continue. Gantzel and Schwinghammer argue that modern warfare reflects a continuation of the nation-state-building process begun in nineteenth-century Europe.In their analysis, economic modernization and social integration destroy traditional relations and create instability in the developing world. While these forces were successfully harnessed by the modern state in Europe and North America, economic and political globalization make a similar resolution considerably more complex. Der Band bringt eine christentumsgeschichtliche Forschungsperspektive in die Migrationsgeschichte ein. Die beteiligten Historiker und Theologen analysieren, warum und wie christliche Akteure und Institutionen zur Integration von Flucht- und Arbeitsmigranten beigetragen haben. Die Aufnahme und Integration von Flüchtlingen, Vertriebenen und Remigranten in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und der Tschechoslowakei nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs werden ebenso untersucht wie die von Arbeitsmigranten und Asylsuchenden in Westdeutschland und der Schweiz zwischen den 1950er und 90er Jahren. In ihrer Summe zeigen die Fallstudien zur Bundesrepublik erstmals, dass und wie sich die Aufnahme und Integration von Migranten seit Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges bis heute zu einem neuen nachhaltigen, wenn auch nicht unumstrittenen Diskurs- und Handlungsfeld christlicher Akteure entwickelte. Kirchen und Christen beteiligten sich praktisch und argumentativ, mit materiellen und geistigen Ressourcen an einer Willkommenskultur und vollzogen notwendige Lernprozesse hinsichtlich der gleichberechtigten Teilhabe von Migranten und der positiven Gestaltung von Vielfalt in Kirche und Gesellschaft. Diese Prozesse evozierten aber auch politischen und innerkirchlichen Widerspruch. Für die ökumenische Kooperation auf den verschiedenen Ebenen sowie die Zusammenarbeit christlicher Akteure mit anderen zivilgesellschaftlichen Kräften war das Handlungsfeld indes ein Katalysator.

Bourdieus Soziologie weiterführend, kann das Zusammenspiel von kognitiven, affektiven und leiblichen Dispositionen mit den Dynamiken gesellschaftlicher Differenz und Konfliktivität als menschliche Praxis erfasst werden. Akteure kommen somit über subjektive Einstellungen und gesellschaftliche Positionierung, Reproduktivität und Kreativität des Handelns, Übereinstimmungen und Differenzen in den Blick. Kollektive Mobilisierung individueller Identitäten wird ebenso plausibel wie der Zusammenhang zwischen dispositionaler Orientierung und strategischem Kalkül. Schäfer entwickelt aus der empirischen Untersuchung religiöser Bewegungen in einem Counter-Insurgency-Krieg eine methodisch operationalisierte Theorie der Identität, die unmittelbar anschlussfähig ist an die bei Springer erschienene praxeologische Epistemologie und Methodologie der HabitusAnalysis.
