Esta publicação surgiu da experiência em um Programa de Melhoramento Genético Participativo de Milho, envolvendo agricultores familiares da Região Centro Sul e do Norte do Paraná, pesquisadores da Universidade Estadual de Londrina e extensionistas. Os principais objetivos deste programa foram capacitar agricultoras e agricultores para produzir e melhorar suas próprias sementes de milho; incentivar a conservação de recursos genéticos; disponibilizar variedades crioulas melhoradas; criar novas variedades compostas; permitir desenvolvimento de variedades adaptadas aos sistemas de agricultura familiar, com melhor uso dos insumos agrícolas externos à propriedade. Assim, esta publicação busca contribuir para uma maior independência dos agricultores em relação às sementes, dando orientações de como produzir e melhorar suas próprias sementes de milho, com ganhos contínuos de produtividade advindos da produção e uso de sementes de boa qualidade, melhoradas para seus próprios sistemas de produção.
