Excerpt from Guide de l'Amateur; Bibliographie des Ouvrages Illustres du Xixe Siecle: Principalement des Livres A Gravures sur Bois Les premiers graveurs fixaient, le plus souvent, par un trait et quelques hachures sobrement menagees, les principaux con tours des personnages et des objets, comme dans le Gil Blas, de 1835; la nouvelle ecole, au contraire, se rapprocha beaucoup plus, par sa maniere, de la gravure au burin, comme dans Le Dame, il lustre par Dore, ou proceda par masses, comme dans les nouvelles editions des oeuvres de Victor Hugo, publiees par Hugues. On peut differer d'avis sur le merite de ces manieres; en ce qui nous concerne, nous n'hesitons pas a dire que la premiere nous semble preferable, d'abord parce qu'elle caracterise ce genre de gravure a l'epoque de sa renaissance, genre qui n'est plus seulement le trait et qui n'est pas la taille - douce, ensuite parce qu'elle donne a la vignette une vigueur de ton que la seconde obtient difficilement, et que la troisieme accentue un peu trop. La plupart des artistes font leur dessin sur le bois, dans ce cas, lorsque la gravure est executee, le dessin est anneanti; quelques uns, au contraire, dessinent sur papier, le dessin est alors photo graphie sur bois; cette derniere methode a un double avantage: pour le dessinateur de conserver son dessin, qui a toujours une valeur; et pour le graveur de pouvoir se guider constamment sur le dessin tout entier de l'artiste.
